Hey everyone

It's been a while since we've been a Forestry Watch family. All good things can come to an end, but all it takes to live happily ever after is a bit of care, energy and will. To start we just want to share what has happened to give some closure.

After honing in our survey methodology over the years, in the summer of 2021/22 we all spent a big survey and public engagement effort in Lonnavale Forests down in the Huon Valley. It cumulated in a report being submitted to government (link in comments) which they appeared to take seriously. We also made a movie which was never released. It was a massive effort on everyone’s behalf, and with the burn out that resulted everyone stepped back for a break and to focus on their own projects. However, after 3 years, this area which is cherished by so many and has had a brief time of light reprieve, is ramping up for logging again. It just shows that you can't trust the industry, as expected, given the priority is logging timber not keeping species from going extinct. Unfortunately for forestry, there are still friends documenting the swift parrots in these forests.

If you're keen to get back involved, we'll be doing some more swift parrot surveys this summer, and we're going to have a swift parrot surveying training session this Monday (10th November) at GRANT. Bob Brown Foundation also do swift parrot habitat surveys and The Wilderness Society does giant tree surveys. No shortage of work to do.

We're grateful for everyone's energy, friendship, kindness, time, support and all the relationships built over this time that will be cherished forever.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

This event will be held on stolen Palawa land. We acknowledge and pay our respects to the many generations of staunch warriors and activists whom have been fighting for Country since colonisation began. Sovereignty was never ceded.

🚨 MAYDENA BIKE PARK LOGGING HAS BEGUN 🚨

Okay, time to rattle the cage! Unf*ckingbelievably, the manager refused a community consultation, even though our premier promised one. They obviously don't care about the community opinion on this one.

We need you to PLEASE send an email to the Tasmanian Premier (check out our little example), it's HUGELY effective, or if you don't have a few minutes, at least sign our petition - link in bio!

We have over 5,000 signatures, and it’s getting represented by politicians. We’ll hand it directly to Rockliff if that’s not enough.

This feels like open provocation. Fu***rs are just baiting us. Premier Rockliff have added 13,000 hectares of Tasmanian native forests for logging, including 4 new giant coupes next to . Right after we told them where to go.

Their intention here is clear. While other states are ending native forest logging... Tassie are going all in.

These clowns aren't playing fairly. It's a middle finger to the bike park, Maydena locals, and every single person that's stood up for this globally significant area. What's more - supercharging the native forest logging industry (one of our largest carbon emitters) as the planet warms and the needle goes into the red, is nothing short of criminal.

Parliament is back from August 8th, where our petition will be tabled. Let's go.

Unfortunately intelligence isn’t contagious, otherwise we’d ask our liberal government to go visit Vic, where they’re ending native forest logging. Like the climate inactive reptiles they are, Tassie just INCREASED the amount of native forests to be logged, including huge areas of old growth forests. More than 13,000 extra hectares to be exact.

Here in Tassie, we just regressed 100 bloody years.

Luckily, we live in a democracy. But it only works if you speak up. The more the merrier!

Standby for a Don’t Fark Our Park update. That just ramped up a s**t tonne.

Let’s get to work!

Okay, time to see this ridiculously epic place for yourself. This Sunday are throwing their weight behind the Maydena campaign to stop the government turning our forests into planet-wrecking clearfells.

The weather forecast is bloody marvellous, plus we’ve got expert talks, a short doco screening, and to top it off - food and bev is ALL TIME. In summary, be there or be square. We’d also strongly recommend bringing your buddies cause community and people power rulez. And the more the merrier. Cya Sundee!

Tassie. Today. What the actual f**k .

Meanwhile, the good sorts in the democracy of Victoria has just committed to ending native forest logging by the end of the year! This is INCREDIBLE, and reflects the environmental, scientific, social and economic pressures.

We’re hanging onto a dying industry here in Tassie. We can change this. Stand up, speak up. We don’t need to see enormous logs hauled from their forests and dragged through our towns anymore.

Hey, legends! Read between the lines here:

Logging of the Maydena Bike Park shuttle road and Junee Road has been POSTPONED, with machinery being removed out of the area.

After 1) a swell of local, national, and even international outrage about this logging (thanks to YOU!), and 2) a community survey a couple of weeks ago found yet *another* giant tree that requires official protection, have decided it’s… ahhh… too wet to log them.

The plan is to delay the logging of these patches of forest forever. Cause lbh they’re worth infinitely more standing.

Thank you to , .action.network.tas and (also 📸) for surveying, reporting and sharing this important work!

A quick update from the Don’t Fark Our Park world…

Last week another giant tree (over 6m across) was found bordering the Maydena Bike Park coupe, resulting in ANOTHER chunk of the coupe being protected from logging! Aww yiss. Furthermore, 24 trees over 2.5m across, were found throughout the coupe.

Thank you to and .action.network.tas volunteers for caring, and doing ’s job for them. This shouldn’t be necessary, but here we are.

We are now awaiting an updated harvest plan from STT. But realistically, this - as well as other natural and social values - warrants removal of the coupe from the logging schedule, and permanent protection.

Sign the petition in our bio if you agree!

Here’s your chance to learn about some bats**t crazy plans to clearfell major tourist attractions in Maydena - 1) a world class bike park, and 2) the forest bordering Junee Cave system, which happens to be home to the deepest caves in Aussie. This weekend, come have a chat and a guided walk through the Junee Cave threatened forest, and see for yourself what makes this part of the world so special. Future generations will thank you for it.

Kick off at 11am Sunday! RSVP via the link in our story.

What We Do

Forestry watch is an independent organisation of scientists and concerned citizens monitoring the actions of Sustainable Timbers Tasmania. We conduct surveys to measure the conservation value of proposed logging coupes, and ensure that STT is complying with forestry regulations. We report our finding to the Forest Practices Authority, the community and relevant stakeholders. We run citizen science events to engage community and increase awareness of how forestry is conducted in Tasmania.
