While some of us were partying the night away at the WAFES Gala Awards, our Lieutenant was on the other side of the world, part of AUS03 on a 35 day deployment, alongside 185 Australian and 57 New Zealand personnel assisting with the Little Giant Fire in Washington State, USA, as well as fires across Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Utah.

Long days, repeated RUI operations and ongoing containment work are being carried out across an enormous and challenging fireground, with significant potential for further expansion.

A huge commitment, representing not only our service but Australian emergency responders on an international stage. We’re incredibly proud of our Lieutenant and the dedication, skill and commitment shown by everyone deployed. Stay safe and keep up the incredible work 🇦🇺🇳🇿

R U OK? DAY 💛

Today is about starting the conversation, but it doesn’t have to start today. Sometimes a simple “How are you going?” asked at the right moment can make someone feel seen, heard and supported when they need it most. A conversation might seem small, but you never know the impact it could have on someone’s life.

Whether it’s a mate, family member, workmate or someone in the emergency services community a simple conversation can make a bigger impact than you might realise.

As emergency responders the work can be quite demanding and sometimes we get so used to asking “Are you okay?” after the tough moments that we forget to ask before them. You don’t need to have all the answers. Taking the time to listen, show you care and let someone know they’re not alone can be enough to make a real difference.

Check in. Listen. Look out for your mates.
Because a conversation could make all the difference💛

We’re pleased to share that our Lieutenant at Mandurah VFRS is currently in the United States 🇺🇸 as part of the Australian firefighting deployment.

The 35-day deployment began with the WA contingent travelling to Boise, Idaho, for orientation, briefings and preparation before heading to the fireground.

The WA deployment consists of:

* 20-person Arduous Fire Fighting Task Force — 1 Task Force Leader, 3 Team Leaders and 16 Arduous Firefighters
* 3-person Arduous Engine Crew — 1 Crew Leader and 2 crew members, including 4WD and chainsaw operators
* 15-person Incident Management Team (IMT)

The WA contingent will join the wider AUS03 Australian deployment, with approximately 150 additional personnel joining the operation — bringing the Australian deployment to around 200 personnel.

We wish our Lieutenant and all Australian personnel involved a safe and successful deployment as they support the firefighting effort in the United States 🇦🇺🇺🇸🚒

Saturday Night we held our Half Annual Dinner, a special evening dedicated to our families, invited guests, neighbouring brigades we have the privilege of working alongside and most importantly, the members of the Mandurah Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service.

It was an opportunity to recognise the dedication, commitment and sacrifices made by our members, whose service continues to make a lasting difference to the Mandurah community.

The evening was filled with memorable moments. From catching up with past, current and life members of the brigade to celebrating the outstanding achievements of those recognised through our annual awards.

Congratulations to our 2026 award recipients:
🏆 Officers’ Award – Malcolm Saunders
🏆 Members’ Award – Craig Smith
🏆 Service Award – Craig Smith

Your dedication, professionalism and commitment to serving both the brigade and the Mandurah community are greatly appreciated.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a memorable occasion. We’d also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our officers and Scott for organising a fantastic evening and for delivering speeches that perfectly balanced heartfelt appreciation with plenty of humour.

When fire strikes, every second counts.

Your smoke alarm is your first line of defence, giving you and your family the critical time needed to escape safely. This winter, take action to make sure your alarms are ready when you need them most.

🔥 TEST your smoke alarms
🧼 CLEAN away dust and cobwebs
🔋 CHECK batteries and operation
🔄 REPLACE alarms older than 10 years

Fire crews see firsthand how working smoke alarms save lives. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Protect what matters most. Make your home fire safe this winter.

Last night our volunteers learnt about lithium-ion batteries and the challenges involved in managing electric vehicle (EV) fires.

Our members learnt about the risks associated with EV incidents, battery behaviour, and the importance of scene safety when dealing with thermal runaway and potential re-ignition hazards.

The training was then put into practice with hands on scenarios covering:
• Identifying electric vehicles
• Identifying hot spots using the TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera)
• Understanding how an incident can quickly shift and escalate
• Managing the scene safely and effectively
• Understanding tactical considerations during EV incidents

Our probationary volunteers also had the opportunity to observe and monitor our active firefighters throughout the scenarios, allowing them to gain valuable insight into incident management, crew operations, and real time decision making during EV related incidents.

Continuous training like this helps ensure our crew stays prepared, informed, and ready to respond safely to emerging hazards within our community 🔥

It’s National Volunteer Week‼️

This week we recognise and celebrate the volunteers who give their time, skills and energy to support our communities.

From Emergency Services — Volunteer Firefighters, SES members and St John responders to coaches, wildlife rescuers, conservation groups and community care volunteers, your commitment makes a real difference every day.

You show up when it matters, you step in without expecting anything in return, and you help keep our communities safer, stronger and more connected.

To every volunteer, thank you for everything you do! It doesn’t go unnoticed and it is genuinely appreciated.

Thank you ❤️
