Helping Our Children Cope with Change
Change is a normal part of school life. At times, this might include a teacher being away and a different teacher stepping in. While some children manage this easily, others may feel worried or unsettled.

Talking About the Change A simple way to support your child is to talk through:

What will stay the same – “You’ll still be in your classroom and see your friends.”
What will stop – “Your regular teacher won’t be there for a little while.”
What will start – “A different teacher will be helping your class.”
Keeping this clear and simple helps children know what to expect.

Why Change Can Be Hard

Some children:

Like routines and knowing what is happening
Feel unsure when something is different
Need extra time to adjust
This is very normal, especially for younger students or those who need extra support.

How You Can Help at Home

Keep it simple – Use clear, calm language
Talk about it more than once – Repetition helps children feel prepared
Focus on the positives – “You might enjoy getting to know a new teacher”
Answer questions honestly – Even if you don’t have all the answers
Keep home routines steady – Familiar routines help children feel safe
Reassure Your Child Let your child know it’s okay to feel unsure and that school is a safe place. Remind them that all teachers are there to help and care for them.

By talking about changes early and simply, we can help children feel more confident and ready for what’s ahead.
