It’s that time of year again, when cane burning begins around the areas between Grafton and the Queensland border, and will continue over the coming months, through to the start of summer.

Often conducted at night, these burns may look dangerous, but are carried out by experienced farmers and crews prior to harvesting.

As these burns are often visible from the Pacific Motorway, we typically see an increase in calls from concerned motorists to Triple Zero (000). In some areas, variable message signs on motorways will warn motorists that cane burning is taking place.

🚨 El Niño has been declared – What does this mean for our community? 🚨
The Bureau of Meteorology has officially declared that Australia has entered an El Niño climate pattern.
🤷🏽‍♂️ So, what exactly is El Niño?
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate event that happens when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. While it occurs thousands of kilometres away, it has a significant impact on Australia’s weather.
For much of eastern Australia, El Niño typically brings:
🔥 Hotter temperatures,
🔥 Reduced rainfall,
🔥 Drier vegetation and soils,
🔥 Increased risk of heatwaves, and
🔥 Elevated bushfire danger.
After several years of wetter conditions, many areas have seen substantial vegetation growth. As these grasses, shrubs and other fuels dry out during warmer and drier weather, they can contribute to more intense and fast-moving fires.
⚠️ While El Niño does not guarantee a severe fire season, it creates conditions that can increase bushfire risk and place greater pressure on firefighters and emergency services.
Now is the time to:
✅ Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan,
✅ Prepare your property and clear hazards around your home,
✅ Ensure pumps, hoses and equipment are serviceable,
✅ Stay informed about fire danger ratings and local conditions, and
✅ Download the Hazards Near Me app.

Pulled the electric blanket out of the cupboard for the first cold
night? Check it before you switch it on.

Look for frays, scorch marks, exposed wires or damage to the
controller. If anything looks off, bin it.

Never fold one while it's on. Never sleep on it switched on.

Today, communities across Australia are coming together to recognise the people who step forward when others need help most.

To every police officer, firefighter, paramedic, emergency services worker, volunteer, dispatcher and first responder family member – thank you.

Thank you for the long shifts, the missed milestones, the sacrifices made behind the scenes, and for showing up when our communities need you most.
