This Men’s Health Week, we’re encouraging men and boys across Bass to take a moment to check in with themselves and with each other.

This year’s message is simple: See your GP.

If something isn’t feeling right, don’t wait. A quick visit could make a real difference.

We know many men put their health last, busy with work, family and community, but too often that means waiting until things become serious.

Here in Bass, it’s about looking out for your mates and your family:
✅ Book that check-up you’ve been putting off
✅ Reach out to a mate and ask how they’re going
✅ Don’t ignore changes to your physical or mental health

Taking action now can help you stay healthier for longer, for yourself and the people who rely on you.

Let’s break the stigma and start the conversation in our community.

This is more uncertainty for workers, families and communities across Northern Tasmania who deserve better.

After everything workers at Bell Bay have already been through, today’s update is deeply disappointing.

Right now, the most important thing is people.

Please look out for each other over the weekend.

Check in on your mates, your colleagues, your neighbours and your family. Don’t assume someone is okay because they seem okay. Ask the question. Send the message. Make the call. Drop in.

And if you are struggling, please tell someone. Tell a mate how you’re feeling. Tell your partner, your family, your GP, or someone you trust. You do not have to carry this on your own.

Free mental health and wellbeing support is available.

You can walk into the Launceston Medicare Mental Health Centre for free, in-person support. No appointment or referral is needed:
https://www.medicarementalhealth.gov.au/service/launceston-medicare-mental-health-centre-16170

Support for Liberty Bell Bay workers and families is also listed here:
https://www.dewr.gov.au/employment/announcements/support-liberty-bell-bay-employees-and-their-families

Lifeline is available 24/7 on 13 11 14.

Northern Tasmania is a strong community. I know people will step up for each other, as they always do.

And over the weekend, we will keep working through every viable option for a secure future for Liberty Bell Bay.

I was proud to stand with our community today at the Lifelong Respect Walk Against Elder Abuse in Launceston.

This important event brings people together to raise awareness of elder abuse and promote dignity, respect and inclusion for older Australians.

Tragically, 1 in 6 Australians experienced elder abuse in the past year, a powerful reminder of why we must keep working together to address this issue.

Thank you to COTA Tasmania and everyone who took part today, walking together to support older Tasmanians and help build safer, more connected communities.

If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out, help is available.

Calling all senior students!

I’m excited to share that the My First Speech competition for 2026 is now open.
This fantastic national program invites students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to step into the shoes of a newly elected Member of Parliament and deliver a 3-minute speech on an issue they are passionate about.

It is a great opportunity to learn about our Parliament, have your voice heard, and build confidence in public speaking.

🏆 Winners from each year level will receive an expenses-paid trip to Canberra with a guardian to present their speech live at Parliament House. It is an incredible experience.
📝 Find out more and submit your entry here- www.aph.gov.au/mfs
⏰ Entries close 11:59pm AEST, Monday 20 July 2026

I encourage all eligible students in our community to take part and share their ideas for Australia’s future

Connection matters. 💛

That’s why the Australia Post Community Grants program is now open, supporting local not-for-profit organisations that help people in our Bass community stay connected and mentally well.

Grants of up to $10,000 are available, with an additional $250,000 dedicated to projects supporting mental wellbeing in disaster-impacted communities.

I encourage all Bass community groups to apply, please share this with a local organisation doing great work or tag them in the comments to make sure they know.
