Wednesday 11:45am, no wind, rain showers, sitting at my computer and Kaboom! huge crash outside and the clattering of horse hooves. I leapt up and looked out the window to see Phoenix with a big flap of skin ripped off his shoulder. I ran out the back door and grabbed a bit of rope to catch him and saw a huge branch had dropped from the enormous applebox tree in the driveway. You know, the one people park under in the shade and I tell them they ought not...
2 hours later I had cleaned the filthy wound as best I could and put his shoulder back together with tubing from a vaccine pack for a drain, buttons for tension sutures, and skin staples that make it look like a zipper.

This little yearling brumby followed us home on our Christmas day ride. We started training him after a quick session of brain surgery (aka castration) and my Finnish helpx girl has made him into a trick horse in 3 short weeks. He's for sale now to help her fund her further travels through Australia. Great little horse for $950. He is a very dark buckskin with a line down his back and should mature to 14.2hh

Rabbits, rabbits everywhere. When we see black rabbits every day we know the numbers are getting up there. Then the myxo starts infecting them and they are slow enough for Toby to catch them and put them out of their myxo misery. You can see the gooey eye in the one Toby caught. The edges of the cat's ears get sore from the rabbit fleas chewing on them.

With a flurry of scrubbing, building and painting, we completed the cabin repairs in early September and are back in business again. Hunters have seen a fallow doe with a fawn already in September. This week they got a fallow stag still with his antlers. They should be dropping them soon and growing some new trophies for the hunters to chase after next March.

It was a typical sequential vortex... generator broke down during a week of cloudy weather so we nursed the freezer along covering it with blankets and running it for a couple hours each day with a small generator, ice buildup along the seal was showing its age and making the motor run almost continuously, fixed the generator head gasket, found a place on the internet to get a seal for a South African Defy freezer and replaced the 20 year old seal in the Kelvinator while we were at it. They arrived in the mail and are now conserving electricity and saving wear and tear on the motors.
Try these guys for your seals, they're great! www.facebook.com/fridge-seal

On 22 July the cabin tried to self destruct, but luckily Paul, Steve and Emma got back just in time to grab the fire extinguisher and douse the flames that roared to life when they opened the door. It appears to have started in the collection of debris between the smaller chimney and the larger brick facade. Barry tidied the edges and we cleaned up the ashes, so are back in business while waiting for the insurance company to decide on our repair options.

We've had a couple of days for the roads to dry out a bit so we could try to get some better drains and fill the ruts and spew holes with rocks. More rain coming, so we'll soon see if our roadworks has been effective.
