🤝COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS MATTER

Last night, Logan Ratepayers Association members Dane and Andrea attended
Councillor Jacob Heremaia's community meeting at Logan Metro.

One of the biggest takeaways from the evening was the positive feedback from residents, many of whom expressed that they felt genuinely heard and listened to throughout the meeting 👏

Cr Heremaia handled the meeting professionally and respectfully, particularly when addressing more challenging or contentious topics, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to have their voice heard.

For Dane and Andrea, they said it was also a wonderful opportunity to meet more members of the community, listen to local concerns and continue building LRA connections with residents from across Logan.

🙏 We would also like to thank Cr Heremaia for making us feel so welcome.

Community conversations are important, and opportunities for residents, councillors and community groups to come together in a respectful environment can only strengthen our city.

We have had a great suggestion from one of our Association members about doing a series of MYTH BUSTING posts ... and we think this is a great idea!

So here is the first one 👇

MYTH BUSTER #1
❌ MYTH:
"Insurance companies don't use flood mapping data provided by Logan City Council."

✅ FACT:
Logan City Council's own CEO confirmed in writing that Council supplied flood mapping data to the Insurance Council of Australia's National Flood Information Database (NFID) in August 2024.

That data included flood level and flood depth information for:
🔘 5% AEP
🔘 2% AEP
🔘 1% AEP
🔘 Probable Maximum Flood (PMF)

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) also states that insurers work closely with local governments to obtain flood information and that councils in Queensland are typically the primary source of this data.

The ICA further explains that government flood data is incorporated into the National Flood Information Database for use by participating insurers.
To be clear ...
➡️ Insurers may use multiple sources of information.
➡️ Some insurers may undertake their own modelling.
➡️ Different insurers use different methodologies.

But the documented evidence shows that Logan City Council flood mapping data was supplied to the Insurance Council of Australia and incorporated into the National Flood Information Database.

This is why residents continue to ask important questions about the relationship between flood mapping, insurance pricing and property impacts.
📌 Don't take our word for it.
📌 Read the documents.
📌 Ask questions.
📌 Follow the evidence.

⁉️ WHAT'S REALLY CHANGED ⁉️

🎤 We've heard repeated public statements from the Mayor and in the media over the last week that the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and 0.05% AEP flood layers are being removed from the main flood portal.

Many residents understandably took that to mean these layers were being removed altogether.

But here's the question ...

Have they really disappeared ❓❓❓

While these layers may no longer be displayed on the main landing page of the public flood portal - they ARE available on the flood model tabs on the page … AND … they will STILL form part of the property reports that prospective purchasers can obtain when researching a property‼️

So if the information is still available through property searches and reports, what practical difference does removing it from the portal actually make ❓

🧐We STRONGLY encouraging residents to look beyond the headlines and examine the details.

The special meeting minutes are now available, and we encourage everyone to read them for themselves.

🔍 Look closer.
📖 Stay informed.
❓ Keep asking questions.

The Logan Ratepayers Association will continue advocating for transparency, clarity and fair outcomes for Logan residents.

❗️THE MINUTES ARE OUT ... AND THIS IS ❌NOT❌ THE WIN WE WERE SOLD❗️

Council’s own meeting minutes now reveal the full picture.

The PMF and 1-in-2,000-year scenario may be removed from the main flood portal, but they can still remain on property reports used by buyers, banks and insurers.

So no ❌ the maps ARE NOT fixed.

Removing the worst information from the front page while leaving it attached to people’s homes is not a solution ❌

It is a change in how the problem is displayed.

‼️This mapping is already causing real harm. People are facing insurance issues, falling property values, refinancing problems and uncertainty about what they can do with their own land.

❌ Residents do not want a cleaner-looking portal with the same flawed data sitting behind it.

We want the maps remodelled ‼️

We also deserve an answer to a basic question 💬
Why was the PMF put on the public portal and included in the risk mapping in the first place if it was never required to be there❓

❌ It should not have taken this long to partially undo a decision that should never have been made.

While the Mayor is out shaking hands and promoting this as a model for other councils to follow, tens of thousands of homes are still affected ‼️

❌ This is not a win

It is a partial rollback of a mistake, with no clear commitment to fix the underlying mapping.

Is this another insult to the community's intelligence⁉️
Something else that we "probably won't understand anyway"⁉️

Residents are not stupid. We can see the difference.

❌ Changing the view is not enough.
Fix the maps ‼️
