Fatality Free Friday event, Springfield

This Friday, May 29, the Ipswich Road Safety Committee, alongside Springfield Police and Ipswich District Highway Patrol, will host an interactive road safety display at Orion Springfield Central from 10am to 2pm to mark Fatality Free Friday.

The event will feature road safety information and hands-on educational activities, including a driver simulator and vision impairment goggles, giving visitors a practical understanding of how impaired or distracted driving affects performance behind the wheel.

Fatality Free Friday is a national initiative that encourages all road users, from pedestrians to heavy vehicle drivers, to make safer choices on the road.

Attendees are encouraged to reflect on their driving behaviours and recommit to simple, life-saving actions that help prevent road trauma.

Slow down, avoid distractions, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wear a seatbelt, and don’t drive tired.

The impact of road trauma extends far beyond a single incident, affecting not only those involved but also their families, friends and the wider community, who are left to cope with lasting emotional, physical, psychological and financial consequences.

Events like this play an important role in raising awareness and encouraging safer choices on our roads.

While Fatality Free Friday serves as a powerful reminder, police stress that road safety must be a commitment made every day.

Queenslanders are urged to pause and consider the choices they make each time they get behind the wheel, because every choice you make behind the wheel, matters.

Armed Robbery charges, Springfield

Detectives from Ipswich Criminal Investigation Branch have charged three men after a man was threatened and had his motorbike stolen from a shopping centre carpark in Springfield overnight, 12 May.

Around 7.10pm officers from the Ipswich Tactical Crime Squad, Ipswich Dog Squad and Springfield Station were called to Southern Cross Circuit following reports a blue Yamaha MTN660 had allegedly been loaded into the back of a 2017 Mitsubishi Triton by three men.

A 25-year-old Redbank Plains man has told police when he approached the vehicle he was allegedly threatened with a firearm before the offenders left the scene.

He was not physically injured.

The vehicle, which was stolen from a Tancred Place address on 3 May, was tracked by POLAIR to Redbank Plains where a tyre deflation device was deployed, stinging the vehicle.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop on Regents Drive before all three occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Two men were arrested at a nearby address while a third man was tracked by PD Iggy to a sports field on Fernbrooke Boulevard where he was arrested.

A 31-year-old Redbank Plains man has been charged with one count of armed robbery and possession of a knife, a 24-year-old Redbank Plains man has been charged with one count of armed robbery, and a 31-year-old Bundamba man has been charged with one count of armed robbery and possessing dangerous drugs.

All three offenders have been remanded to appear before the Ipswich Magistrates Court on 27 May.
