As the Bruce Highway is a state-controlled road, these works are managed by TMR.

Cassowary Coast Careers Day 2026👩‍🏫

Cassowary Coast Careers Day 2026 provided young people with the opportunity to explore career pathways, connect with local businesses and industries, and gain insight into the skills and qualifications needed for future employment.

The event was tailored to the Cassowary Coast Region and helped strengthen connections between local youth, education, employment and the wider community.

As part of the event, a youth survey was conducted to help guide the Youth Advisory Committee and provide Council with a better understanding of what matters to young people, including what they wanted to see, do and be involved in across the Cassowary Coast.

Those who completed the survey went into the draw to win a YETI prize pack.

🌿 From pub to paddock – talking pigs, pests and weeds!

Great news - Ariella from Biosecurity Queensland is joining Council officers Arthur and Rowan at Hotel Euramo next Wednesday for our first 'pub to paddock' session.

Ariella will be sharing practical information about priority invasive plants in our region, including what to look out for and why early identification matters.

🐢 Our keen volunteers from the Cassowary Coast Shorebird and Sea Turtle Watch Program were back in training this weekend!

After two great shorebird sessions, the crew turned their attention to sea turtles. They learnt about our local species, tracks and nesting signs, hatchlings, threats and turtle ID.

A big thank you to the Mandubarra Aboriginal Land & Sea Inc Rangers for welcoming us and sharing their knowledge and connection to Country.

We can’t wait to see what turns up on our beaches this season!

Celebrating 10 years of service - Councillor Jeff Baines - Cassowary Coast Regional Council ✨

For the past 10 years, Cr Jeff Baines has proudly served the Cassowary Coast community as Division 5 Councillor.

Throughout that time, he has worked hard to build meaningful connections across the community, with a focus on respect, understanding and collaboration.

Cr Baines has also shown a strong commitment to caring for the environment and protecting the natural treasures that make our region so special - from our heritage-listed rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef.

As we mark this milestone, we thank Cr Baines for his dedication, advocacy and service to the people and places of the Cassowary Coast.

⚠️Culvert works - Silky Oak Creek Road, Silky Oak

From today, we have begun culvert renewal works on Silky Oak Creek Road.

These works are needed to replace infrastructure damaged during the 2025 flood event.

Please note:
- Silky Oak Creek Road will be closed to through traffic during works
- Works are expected to be completed by 12 October 2026, weather permitting
- Working hours are Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 6:30pm

We’re going cassowary crazy at next week's Science in the Pub! 💚🐦

In the lead-up to World Cassowary Day, join us for an evening all about our region’s most iconic species.

Hear from Terry Carmichael from the Wet Tropics Management Authority about the fascinating life of the southern cassowary, its important role in our rainforests and why Mission Beach provides such significant habitat.

Then Jeffrey Lewis and Joanna Schmid from Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service will take us through cassowary sighting reporting using QWildlife, what the data can tell us about cassowary movements and distribution, and how it helps inform management.

There’ll also be time for a Q&A with the wildlife rangers — so bring along your cassowary questions!

💬 Cardwell sewerage network consultation update

Thank you to everyone for sharing their views on whether Council should further investigate a potential future sewerage network for Cardwell.

We received 241 responses to the survey and community views were closely balanced, key themes identified throughout the consultation included:
- concerns about potential connection costs and ongoing charges
- many people feel their current septic or on-site systems are working well
- potential benefits for waterways, coastal areas and the environment
- potential benefits for housing, tourism and future infrastructure
- questions about who would benefit, who would pay and whether a network is needed.

What happens next?

Councillors and Council officers are reviewing the feedback to help inform a recommendation on whether further investigation should be pursued.

The recommendation will be considered at the September 2026 Local Government Meeting, and we’ll update the community on Council’s decision.
