Huon Refugee Support Group

Huon Refugee Support Group Supporting refugees to settle in the Huon Valley CRSI has established groups all over Australia, including here in the Huon Valley.

The Community Refugee Sponsorship Initiative (CRSI) was founded by a number of established not-for-profit organisations and funded principally by the Sidney Myer Foundation. It is modelled on the well-established Canadian community refugee sponsorship model and other small models around the world. Community refugee sponsorship can unlock the goodwill of ordinary Australians to help refugees succes

sfully settle and integrate in their local communities and supplement the government-led resettlement program. The Huon Refugee Support Group is made up of volunteers from the community who actively engage with refugees and people seeking asylum wishing to move to the Huon Valley. The group gives holistic, individualised and intensive support to help them integrate into the area.

A common thread of the asylum seeker/refugee experience is the breakdown and separation of the family unit. When a family member reaches safety in Tasmania, finding and reuniting with their loved ones is often their main priority.

Family reunification cases reflect roughly 50% of our caseload. There is significant demand for our service as children and spouses remain separated from one another in unsafe and unstable situations. Hazaras from Afghanistan are heavily represented.

While this a modest positive change, the total cap has not increased and we continue to advocate for holistic broad-sweeping changes to the program.

We had a huge 2024/25 financial year amidst unprecedented demand for our services. Some of the highlights include:

๐Ÿ’ฅ144 permanent visas granted
๐Ÿ’ฅOver 1,500 active clients
๐Ÿ’ฅ418 enquiries and referrals received directly or through community partners

Every day we push. We advocate. We persevere. Because we believe everyone has a right to a safe place to live and a safe way to get there.
