STAFF PICKS 📚 💬 | Louise felt 😍😄 when she read DRIFT by Pip Harry

Fourteen-year-old Nate has just moved back to Australia and is finding it hard to navigate a new city, school and changed home life. His next-door neighbour, Luna, is dealing with her own issues: a viral video, friends who have dropped her, and a subsequent anxiety disorder.
When a swarm of 20,000 bees unexpectedly settle in the walls of Nate's family's house, Nate and Luna come together to save the hive, befriending local beekeeper Tyler. Over the course of one summer, their loyalties will be tested and their lives will be forever changed.

This book includes the following elements, so you might enjoy it if you like:
✅ Fast paced
✅ Unconventional, character driven story
✅ Descriptive language
✅ Authentic, likeable characters

Louise describes this book as a verse novel, so it is very easy to read with less words per page, very cleverly formatted. She said the connection between the two main characters draws you in as does the side characters which includes a beehive. Louise believes there needs to be more books like this that realistically portrays the struggle of anxiety disorders in a relatable way.

Our librarians love to talk about the books they are reading, so feel free to come in and ask for a suggestion!

Remember the June long weekend when the Pasha Bulker ran aground… and the wild storms that hit our own backyard?

Back in June 2007, while much of NSW watched the dramatic scenes unfold in Newcastle, Hornsby Shire was also feeling the force of one of the most intense weather events in recent memory.

Over that Queen’s Birthday long weekend, a powerful East Coast Low brought heavy rain, destructive winds and huge swells across the coast. It was part of a series of five lows that formed that month, but this was the most severe, developing rapidly and tracking down the NSW coastline before moving out to sea on 10 June.

Up in Newcastle, the impact was record breaking. In just six hours, 164.6 mm of rain fell, flooding shops and businesses, stranding cars and leaving a lasting mark on the city. The storm is now firmly etched in memory thanks to the grounding of the Pasha Bulker on Nobbys Beach on 8 June, where the 40,000 tonne vessel remained stuck for weeks.

While the images of that iconic red ship drew global attention, closer to home the damage was also significant.

LUNA ROO IN THE LIBRARY 📚⚽🦘 | Last week we had lots of fun celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime at Pennant Hills Library.

This year's book was Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, illustrated by Jake Minton.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an event run annually by , where children across the country all gather to hear the same story at the same time all over Australia.
It’s a celebration of reading, literacy, community – and a reminder of the essential role libraries play in nurturing learning, connection and a love of stories.

Regular Storytime sessions run during the school term at our Hornsby, Pennant Hills, and Berowra branches. For more information head to our website 👉https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/Library/Whats-on-at-the-Library/Programs-for-Preschoolers
