NORTH WEST QUEENSLAND + DIRRANBANDI
About halfway between Charters Towers and Hughenden in Queensland, fires are raging through White Mountains National Park, coming perilously close to several grazing stations.
Sharon Jonsson, a grazier and supporter of Baked Relief, is leading the efforts to manage the fires in Torrens Creek and Pentland, working alongside the Prairie Rural Fire Brigades. Together with 30 other dedicated volunteers, they have been facing dry conditions and strong north-northwesterly winds as they battled the blaze.
The commitment of all these volunteers cannot be overstated. They have endured sleepless nights and physical exhaustion but continue to push forward with determination and smiles, gathering stories to share later.
As of this update, the fire is now contained, and crews are focused on mopping up and patrolling the area.
Down in Dirranbandi the hard-working RFSQ and QFR firies remain on scene at Dirranbandi, monitoring the bushfire which burned approximately 1700 hectares this week.
It’s been a challenging few days for the town, but thanks to a tremendous effort from firefighters and water bombing aircraft, the township has not been affected by the fire, which remains contained.
At Baked Relief HQ, we have collaborated with the owner of the Hughenden Foodworks, who has been generously providing the crews with treats, food, and water.
We have also reached out to those in Dirranbandi to see what may assist.
Through QCWA Oxley : Cake, Women and Action we are raising funds—every bit counts—and will direct this money to the local Foodworks / IGAs / Local butchers to purchase essential supplies for the crews. This initiative reflects our direct giving philosophy, and we are committed to supporting local businesses whenever we can.
