Severe storms expected across NSW today - Severe storms, strong winds, large waves for the south-east.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are developing over inland NSW and will continue to build throughout today.
🟥Severe storms are likely in areas: Sydney, Wollongong, Central Tablelands and the Lower Hunter.
⚠️Hazards to watch out for: Damaging winds exceeding 90 km/h, localised heavy rainfall and large hail.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are current from the Bureau of Meteorology with damaging winds developing over southeastern NSW including the ACT on Friday. 👉Read the full warnings here https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and.../warnings-and-alerts
🛑 If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route. Flash flooding can be dangerous and unpredictable.
You can prepare now, and:

✅ Move your car under cover or away from trees to protect it from hail damage.

⚠️ Severe Thunderstorm Warning for HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Metropolitan, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, South West Slopes, Hunter, Southern Tablelands and Riverina districts. Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Bowral, Katoomba, Tumbarumba, Lithgow and Penrith.

⚠️ Safety advice
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
✅ Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
✅ Never walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
✅ Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

🌊 Due to adverse weather and flash flooding affecting Sydney, a number of roads are closed and many are affected by floodwaters.

Currently closed roads:
❌ City West Link at Haberfield.
❌ Parramatta Road near Railway Street at Homebush.
❌ Raw Square at Strathfield between Albert and Everton Road.

ℹ️ As with the nature of these incidents, conditions can change very quickly. Avoid any unnecessary travel, and of course NEVER drive through floodwaters.

Detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning for INTENSE RAINFALL
For people in parts of Gosford/Wyong, Sydney and Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury areas.
Issued at 6:06 pm Saturday, 17 January 2026.

INTENSE RAINFALL WITH THUNDERSTORMS SOUTHERN CENTRAL COAST.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 6:00 pm, a VERY DANGEROUS THUNDERSTORM likely to produce heavy, locally intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding was detected near Calga and Woy Woy. This thunderstorm is slow moving. It is forecast to affect Upper Mangrove by 7:00 pm.

Other severe thunderstorms likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Bundeena and Kurnell. These thunderstorms are slow moving. They are forecast to affect Hurstville, Botany and waters off the Royal National Park by 6:30 pm and Sutherland, Sydney Airport and Canterbury by 7:00 pm.

⚠️Severe Thunderstorm Warning for LARGE, POSSIBLY GIANT HAILSTONES, DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL in parts of NSW

Safety advice
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
✅ Move your car under cover or away from trees.
✅ Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
✅ Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
✅ Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
✅ Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

On this extremely hot day, strong and damaging winds are adding to already challenging conditions across parts of south east and eastern NSW.

A southerly change is expected through the Illawarra and Sydney this evening, bringing damaging southerly winds.

💨 ILLawarra, Sydney & Southern Central Coast
• Damaging southerly winds averaging 55–65 km/h
• Peak gusts up to 100 km/h possible
• Likely from early this evening

With extreme heat and strong winds combined, conditions can change rapidly. Secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel in exposed areas, and stay informed as the southerly change moves through.
