They beat us to it but they have explained it so well, we thought we’d share it.

We would like to give a friendly reminder that even though the bushfire danger period will end at midnight tonight (31st March) , you are still required to notify your intention to burn to the Rural Fire Service. Follow the link below or call 02 6626 6922.

This is not a new rule, but with more people moving into rural areas, it is important for everyone to follow the rules.
If your fire is reported to 000 and you've failed to notify the RFS, significant fines can be issued.

Notifying all adjoining neighbours (including those directly across a road or creek) at least 24 hours prior to lighting, is still a requirement, regardless of the time of year.

Volunteers do not want to attend if you do not require help, so we ask you to take a few minutes to notify your intention.

Notify 24/7 in just a few minutes.

Over this past weekend several members from Casino East RFB along with other NSW RFS - Northern Rivers Zone brigade’s, deployed as a Strike Team to the Rocky River fire near Drake, to provide a well earned rest for the brigades of NSW RFS Northern Tablelands District.

Saturday we seen our Deputy Captain Frank Hill and Senior Deputy Captain Nate Cawley as part of the Strike Team, working on Bungawalbyn 9, and Sunday saw Advance Firefighter Alex Robson-Mortimer and Senior Deputy Captain Nate Cawley again deployed on Bungawalbyn 9.

Plenty of experiences were gained, particluarly as we normally work from our brogade Cat 1 Tanker (3500L) to working on a Cat 9 (600L).
Our strike team also had the benefits of being lead by North Casino Captain Steph Cawley ( doing third party hours for her Group Leader qualification) and Group Officer Scott Newton.

A great weekend was had by the Casino East crew, working with Casino Rural Fire Brigade , Tomki Rural Fire Brigade , Woodview RFB, Mummulgum RFB, Grevillia RFB, Group Officer Barry Morgan and the NRZ Bulk tanker.

Well done all crews!

** RECOGNISING OUR COMMUNITY BEST THIS AUSTRALIA DAY **

Richmond Valley Council is inviting residents and visitors to come together and mark Australia Day at Rappville Hall on Monday 26 January, with celebrations starting from 9am.

The event is the official Australia Day celebration for the Richmond Valley and will bring the community together to recognise the people and values that help shape the region. A key part of the morning will be the Richmond Valley Australia Day Awards, beginning at 10am.

Twenty local nominees have been recognised across the award categories: Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year, Volunteer and Young Volunteer of the Year, Sportsperson and Young Sportsperson of the Year and the newly introduced Community Organisation of the Year. Together, they reflect the many ways people contribute to community life across the Valley.

The nominees are: Annie Vandervegt; Archer Craggs; Casino Youth Hub; Connor Shepherd; Crystal Gill; Frangipani Care; Helen Cowan; Isabel DeWit; Jan Danaher; Jeff Gibbs; Jocelyn Serone; Joel Beaumont; Kyden Bolt-Williams; Lachlan Coe; Malcolm Hancock; Neville Braithwaite; Phil Cornish; Tony Curtis; Ty Phelps; and Vida Stenner.

On the day, a multimedia display featuring photos and short videos will share the stories of each nominee and their involvement in the community. Following Australia Day, the exhibition will be available to view at the Casino Community and Cultural Centre for a further month.

Mayor Robert Mustow will also lead a citizenship ceremony, welcoming new Australian citizens from diverse backgrounds who will officially pledge their commitment to Australia before the awards are announced.

The celebration will include live music, children’s activities, and a range of food and market stalls, making it a relaxed and welcoming event for all ages.

The community is encouraged to attend and take part in a day that recognises local effort, community spirit, and what it means to belong in the Richmond Valley.

VALE - – Eric Abraham Box

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Foundation and Life Member, Mr. Eric Box.

Eric was a founding member of the Casino Rescue Squad in 1980 and dedicated an extraordinary 45 years of volunteer service to the communities of NSW.

Throughout his decades of service, Eric held many key executive positions within the squad from President through to Captain. His most significant and enduring contribution was as our Training Officer, where he shaped generations of rescue operators with his skill, patience, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Eric was also formally recognised by the NSW State Rescue Board as a Senior Rescue Instructor, a testament to his world-class ability to teach, mentor and demonstrate complex technical rescue skills. He was, without question, one of the finest technical rescue instructors in NSW.

Only recently, our squad stood beside Eric and his family during the heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife, Margaret, also a life member. Today, we stand with them again.

Eric passed away peacefully at home due to a medical condition. His sudden loss has deeply affected us all, and like the family, our hearts are hurting.

To the Box family, our VRA Rescue family, our sister emergency service agencies, and the greater community, we extend our heartfelt and deepest condolences.

Eric your service is now complete. You answered the call; now we answer for you. Rest easy, your watch is over.

VALE – Eric Abraham Box

May you rest in eternal peace.
