Land for Wildlife - Southern Region

Land for Wildlife - Southern Region The minimum size of the habitat to be protected is 0.5 hectare (just over 1 acre).

Land For Wildlife is a free, voluntary program which aims to encourage and assist private landholders to provide habitats for wildlife on their property, even though the property may be managed primarily for other purposes. The program aims to promote continuity of habitat across landscapes, community participation in nature conservation, and to contribute to the ecologically sustainable long-term viability of agricultural systems.

Successful Revegetation Tip #3 (thanks to Daryl and Craig) – Use a high ratio of pioneer and fast-growing species. Select between 30-60% pioneers in any revegetation project. Pioneer and fast-growing native species will help “capture” the site quicker. They can be readily pruned or allowed to drop their leaves and branches to help build up a healthy soil and leaf litter layer full of fungi, invertebrates and small animals. These are the building blocks of a complex, healthy ecosystem. Full story is in the Feb 2024 LfWSEQ magazine at https://www.lfwseq.org.au/newsletters/

Last week, regional providers for Land for Wildlife gathered at the South Coast to Tablelands forum to gain valuable insights into property management programs and new tech that is allowing better environmental policy.

We heard from Donna, principal project officer at the Biodiversity Conservation Trust, who led a discussion on the types of conservation agreements and new partnerships that are protecting private land.

With Aaron and Lewis, we explored NatureMapr, a new citizen science platform that is guiding better environmental policy.

Margot from BirdLife Australia introduced the Birds on Farms project, a bird monitoring program that assists interested landholders in developing habitat restoration plans.

Gary shared how The Great Eastern Ranges is enhancing partnerships and delivering programs across the east coast of Australia.

With Paul from CEN and Waterwatch, we learned about data collection methods and monitoring the health of waterways.

If you are interested in finding out more about any of these programs, please get in touch.
