I found this old bench near Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens… but it has a story most people probably walk straight past.”

“This red granite bench was placed here in 1953 by the Rotary Club of Melbourne.”

“It was made to honour the friendship between Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, and Sir Angus Mitchell — the first Australian to become President of Rotary

“And this spot goes back even further. In March 1935, Paul Harris came here and planted a Brush Box tree — on his only visit to Australia.”

“Years later, Angus Mitchell became Rotary International President in 1948–49 and travelled around the world promoting international understanding.”

“I’ve walked past so many little pieces of Melbourne history like this. Would you have stopped to read this plaque?”

What a wonderful evening with the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains!

I thoroughly enjoyed the warm fellowship, lively conversation and opportunity to learn more about the club’s valuable work in the local community.

Thank you to President's Carolyn and Amanda and all the members and guests for making me feel so welcome. It was inspiring to see the friendship, enthusiasm and genuine commitment to service that make this club so special.

Together, we continue to strengthen Rotary, create meaningful connections and make a lasting difference in our communities.

⚠️ A ShelterBox team has arrived in Nepal and is assessing the situation after catastrophic flash floods devastated communities.

A powerful surge of water, mud, ice and debris washed away homes, roads and bridges, leaving communities cut off and families without safe shelter.

More than 1,000 people have died, over 4,200 are missing, and an estimated 65,000 people have been affected.

Our team is meeting with Rotary International members and other humanitarian organisations to understand what might be needed and how we can best support affected communities.

We are also speaking to potential partners to understand how we could work together to address immediate needs and are considering essential aid items like blankets, sleeping mats, tarpaulin and ropes.

As assessments continue, we'll keep you updated on how ShelterBox can help families recover and rebuild.

Thank you for your generosity so far. Please, if you can, donate today to help families in Nepal 💚👉 bit.ly/4yaDtEj

Bernie Paysden Retirement

After 12 years performing with the Little Black Ducks at the twice monthly Glenbrook Markets, Bernie Paysden is hanging up his ukelele. At the age of 85, Bernie and his wife Maria have decided to do some travelling together. Bernie began his musical career in the Swinging 60s in London at the same time as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He has travelled all over the world performing on cruise ships, but finally decided to call Australia home. He and Maria eventually settled in the Blue Mountains. The Little Black Ducks are taking a break during September, but will be welcomed back in October. Bernie’s shoes will be hard to fill, but Matt is keen to try as their new addition. President of the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains, Carolyn Fitzpatrick presented Bernie with a certificate of appreciation and market music co-ordinator Jan Clarke presented Bernie with a cake with Bernie’s face in icing which was enjoyed by market goers.
