This week marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, following the significant date of 27 May — a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Yesterday, we were honoured to welcome our special guest Djarrin from Cultural Infusion to our centre. Children were immersed in a rich cultural experience through music, storytelling, movement and hands-on learning.
Djarrin introduced the children to the Yidaki (Didgeridoo), creating a variety of sounds inspired by Australian animals, which the children eagerly identified with excitement and curiosity. The session was filled with interactive games, traditional dance moves and meaningful conversations about Aboriginal culture and traditions.
Children explored different types of boomerangs and learned about their traditional uses. Djarrin also shared a very special Coolamon, traditionally used to carry and settle babies. He explained how he used it to put his daughter to sleep, wrapping her in kangaroo skin for warmth and comfort. The Coolamon held deep cultural significance, as it was beautifully painted by his mother, an Indigenous Elder, featuring symbols representing iguanas, rivers and snake tracks.
Experiences like these help children develop respect, understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives from an early age.
We thank Djarrin for sharing his knowledge, culture and stories with our children and educators.
