Sunday 23 May marks World Boating Day🚤. With this year’s campaign themed , we‘re running a photo competition to see what floats Victorian’s boats.

Better Boating Victoria is keen to see pics that show boaters launching from Victoria’s boat ramps and enjoying our coastal and inland waterways.

In the comment section, post a pic of your boat in a scenic location that showcases one of Victoria’s many beautiful rivers, lakes, or coastal waters (bonus if it includes a boat ramp!) with the location, and the images with the most likes win.
Prizes will be awarded to the best coastal boating and inland boating pics, with each winning contributor taking home a $100 voucher to a boating, tackle, or outdoor store of their choice.

Entries are now open and close 5pm Thursday 21 May. The winner will be announced on Friday 22 May in time for on Saturday.

Meet Russell from South Africa and Basil from Seychelles 👋

Russell and Basil were launching their vessel at Corinella on Monday, when the Better Boating Victoria team bumped into them while checking out the boat ramp.

With light winds, calm swells, and clear blue skies, it was the perfect day to get out on the water in Western Port.

The pair were heading out to Tortoise Head in the hopes of catching some late season King George whiting 🎣

We hope you were successful in snagging some trophy-sized KGs!

📢HAVE YOUR SAY on Ovens River boat ramp designs.

Consultation is now open for the public to provide their feedback on 2 boat ramp concept designs worked up for Ovens River in Wangaratta.

One concept builds on the existing boat ramp at Templeton Street, Wangaratta, while the other design concept is a new boat ramp proposed for Frank Garth Reserve Beach in Wangaratta.

The Rural City of Wangaratta was awarded $35,000 to develop concept designs for boat ramps along Ovens River through Better Boating Victoria’s 24/25 Structural Maintenance Grants Program.

This project was made possible thanks to your boating licence and registration fees through the Victorian Government’s Better Boating Fund.

Consultation is now open and closes on Monday 25 May.

Our tour of boating and fishing clubs across Victoria continues, with BBV’s Chris Padovani paying a visit to the Wangaratta & District Sportfishing Club on Monday night.

More than 25 club members turned out to discuss all things boating.

We talked through Victoria’s biggest ever boat ramp construction program and explained how boat licence and registration fees are reinvested across Victoria’s recreational boating sector.

We discussed the methodology used to select ramps for upgrading, as well as boat ramp projects completed to date, projects under construction, and what’s on the horizon.

The club was very excited to hear that the nearby Boorhaman North boat ramp is expected to be upgraded in time for summer. Learn more about the project here: https://betterboating.vic.gov.au/ramp-upgrades/ovens-river-boorhaman-north/

Club members also provided their feedback on other ramps in the area that should be prioritised for upgrading in the future.

We love getting out to meet the users of Victoria’s boat ramps, from angling clubs to power boat clubs, and ski clubs.

If you’ve got an upcoming club meeting and want us to come along for a chat, email [email protected] or send us a direct message!

Recreational boaters can look forward to safer access in and out of Port Fairy boat ramp thanks to the installation of a new solar light and stop block.

Alongside the installation of a stop block at the end of the ramp and a solar light, traffic flow improvements are also underway with line marking and signage being installed to direct boaters navigating the ramp and make boundaries clearer.

These works will be completed during a quieter period as the ramp is very busy during peak bluefin tuna season.

The Moyne Shire Council was awarded $15,900 to undertake the boat ramp safety enhancements through the Better Boating Fund, which reinvests your boating licence and registration fees into improved facilities for the state’s boat owners.

It’s all go at Tooradin boat ramp in Western Port where upgrade works are well underway.

Three weeks into construction, excavators are on site undertaking earthworks before the existing three-lane ramp is completely renewed. The upgraded facility will feature extended ramps, each with grooved surfaces.

The ageing pontoons will be replaced too, and made longer, so more boats can tie up while skippers park trailers.

The entrance lane is also being widened from one lane to two to help ease congestion and improve traffic flow.

Works are due for completion before snapper season kicks off in spring 2026.

It’s week 3 of the Mornington boat ramp upgrade at Schnapper Point.

Contractors are now in the process of removing two jetties that will both be replaced and extended, giving boaters more space and better access.

Once complete, Schnapper Point will boast two new jetties, a wider and improved boat ramp, and a new concrete maneuvering area making launching and retrieving vessels easier.

The upgrade is backed by the Victorian Government’s Better Boating Fund which reinvests boaters’ licence and registration fees into improved facilities for the state’s boat owners.

01/05/2026

We know you want well-maintained boat ramps, which is why we’re reinvesting your boat licence and registration fees into two grant programs to help asset managers dredge and maintain facilities.

Grants of up to $110,000 will support organisations that manage public boat ramps across Victoria to repair and maintain facilities so that boat ramps remain functional and safe. Eligible projects include repairing boat ramp surfaces, jetties or pontoons and minor works to breakwall structures and car parks.

A separate program is being run for dredging, with grants of up to $110,000 available for dredging projects to ensure safer access and navigation at publicly accessible Victorian boating facilities.

Organisations eligible to apply for the grants include local councils, committees of management, catchment management authorities, water corporations and state government bodies. Applications are now open and will close COB Friday, 12 June.

Find out more about each program here:
