Victorian Institute of Teaching Our vision is to ensure that Victorian learners have the best teachers. VIT’s core purpose is to ensure that Victorian learners have the best teachers.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is an independent statutory authority for the teaching profession, whose primary function is to regulate members of the teaching profession. The VIT was established by the Victorian Institute of Teaching Act 2001 in December 2002. We do this by accrediting initial teacher education (ITE) programs, monitoring the suitability of registered teachers, developing their practice through professional standards and regulating their compliance with the Victorian Teaching Profession's Codes of Conduct and Ethics. It is a legal requirement for all teachers to be registered with VIT in order to be employed in a Victorian school or early childhood education and care service or children’s service. Teacher registration helps maintain professional status, standing and public confidence in the teaching profession, particularly in the suitability of teachers to work with children. VIT and AITSL have partnered to develop Six Illustrations of Practice that showcase authentic early childhood teaching aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).

These practical resources can support early childhood teachers, mentors and leaders to:
✅ understand the APST in practice
✅ explore evidence of teaching at the Proficient career stage
✅ reflect on and discuss professional practice
✅ support professional learning and development

Today, on the anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, we recognise the importance of upholding and advancing the rights of Indigenous Peoples worldwide.

The Declaration sets out the rights of Indigenous Peoples to maintain their cultures and languages, strengthen their connection to lands and resources, and exercise self-determination. It also highlights the importance of meaningful involvement in decisions that affect their lives and communities.

As we mark this occasion, we reflect on the progress achieved and the ongoing commitment needed to ensure these rights are recognised, respected and realized.

Equivalent practice and educational leadership can help you meet these requirements when your work aligns with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and supports teaching and learning outcomes.

If you declare that you're undertaking equivalent practice or educational leadership, you must be able to provide evidence of this.

As part of VIT's review of the Provisional to Full Registration Inquiry process, we have been engaging with recently registered teachers, mentors and principals from across Victoria.

Through a series of interactive consultation sessions, participants have explored how the Inquiry process can better align with contemporary teaching practice, support the professional growth of early career teachers, recognise the important roles of teachers, mentors and school leaders, and reduce unnecessary administrative burden.

We value the time, experience and professional judgement shared by the Victorian education community. The insights gathered through these discussions will help inform a more contemporary, efficient and supportive Inquiry process for early career teachers. 🤝
