Carers Australia is aware of misleading and inaccurate comments made recently by an entity with regards to our funding, staff salaries and our work for carers. We take these comments very seriously. While we appreciate that this is a public page, it is here to share information useful to carers and to provide updates on our advocacy for the sector. We welcome respectful feedback but we set clear terms of use so our staff and followers are not subjected to abuse and distress. We know the majority of those who use these pages do so respectfully and understand there are many voices, issues and interests in the caring community. Carers Australia continues to advocate for carers, including directly engaging with government over the NDIS changes among other issues.

Yesterday, carers from across Australia took their chance to tell MPs and Senators about the realities of combining paid work with caring responsibilities.

At Australia’s Parliament House, their conversations focused on the practical impacts policy decisions have on everyday life. How those decisions eventually land at carers kitchen tables, on Australians trying to balance work, care, finances and family responsibilities.

Carers shared both the barriers they face in participating in the workforce and the supports that make a meaningful difference, including flexible work arrangements, accessible services and policies that recognise the value of unpaid care.

With carers contributing more than $78 billion worth of unpaid care each year, these discussions are critical to shaping a workforce and economy that better supports carers to participate fully in paid employment, should they be able to do so.

Thank you to the carers who contributed their time, insights and lived experience to these important conversations.

Today we took carers to Australia’s Parliament House to tell their stories directly to MPs and Senators.

Six carers from across the country joined us to share the barriers and facilitators to being part of the paid workforce, while also having a caring role.

Their caring journeys as parents, siblings, daughters, sons and brothers while also being part of the country’s paid workforce are just a snapshot of the experiences of Australia’s carers.

Carers contributed $2 billion a week in unpaid care, we want to see more support and more flexible working so they can join the paid workforce too.

In today's workforce, many employees are balancing their professional responsibilities with caregiving roles. Without support, they may reduce hours, take unplanned leave, or leave the workforce.

The Carer-Inclusive Workplace Initiative helps businesses create flexible, supportive workplaces that boost retention, morale, and productivity while strengthening diversity, equity and inclusion.

Support your people. Strengthen your business.

Supporting carers in paid work and back into work is an important conversation. Today, Carers Australia held a policy forum examining this issue, the barriers to work and the supports needed to ensure carers who want to participate in paid work can do so.

We were privileged to hear from carers with lived experience, including Josie, who cared for her mum with motor neurone disease (MND), and Nicholas, who cared for his mum living with dementia. Their stories highlighted both the challenges and the importance of flexible, supportive workplaces for carers across Australia.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion. Together, we can continue advocating for policies and workplaces that recognise and support the vital role carers play in our communities and economy.
