Theresa here 👋

Are you the Cycle Breaker in your family? Maybe you have stood by and watched the Cycle Breaker and have been inwardly nodding your head but not speaking up?

Family dynamics are tricky things aren't they. We all play our roles and we all carry on with cycles that perhaps do not serve us or others.

I think that being a Cycle Breaker is more common than we may imagine. I think that every family either has a cycle breaker, or wishes they had the guts to be one or to stand up next to one and hold their hand.

Speaking up nicely (not in an abusive way) in order to shed light on what is kept in the dark is a thing. Miscarriage, su***de and family trauma are three biggies I reckon.

I also reckon that the more of us who just say stuff, who bring stuff out into the open the more we all may take the sting out stigma.

It's all well and good to pretend we are perfect and all is well however it is more common that things are all is well and we are embarrassed or ashamed or scared or something and just keep a lid on things to keep the peace.

But is it really keeping the peace? Are we really more peaceful, are our communities more peaceful for keeping the lid on things and expecting others to do the same? I don't' think so actually.

Theresa here 👋

Happy Mother's Day💐🪺🫖

Do you think it's weird that superheros are never depicted as mothers, or the other way around?

As a mother I can tell you flat straight that being a mother is HARD WORK and demanding of every fibre of your being, physical, mental and spiritual.

It is also incredibly rewarding in ways that may not be put into words.

We wish you are very happy mother's day and we send our deepest love and respect to you if a child of yours has died taking their life. And if you no longer have your mum around, all our love to you too.

You are loved, you are not to blame.

Theresa here 👋

How has your day been?
I have had a lovely day. This is, according to me, just the best weather.
Nice and cool and yet the soil is still warm so as an avid gardener, plant, plant, plant!

Today I ACTUALLY crossed the street and took cuttings from a neighbour's rose. The blooms are next level fragrant and so just the thing for cooking. I have been meaning to do this for a while so I am feeling very proud of myself for putting some cuttings into a good mix of sand and perlite in a wee pot.

I also planted an apple tree, took cuttings of a viburnum and more!

Once I get started on all the little things the momentum builds BUT far out it can me hard to make a start. Do you find that? But when you do 😍

Anyway, I have cut and pasted some info on a Men's Su***de Workshop which looks just fabulous.

Here ya go 👇

Cross your fingers and toes for my cooking rose to strike!🤞

"Men account for three in four su***des. However, research shows that in many services, up to four in five people who access su***de prevention support are female. As a sector, we need to improve our ability to reach and engage with men.

Training Outcomes
Expand your understanding of male su***de

Explore the principles of male-friendly services

Strengthen your capacity to engage with men at risk

Reflect on changes the sector can make to prevent male su***de

Create a plan to apply your learning after the workshop

What to Expect
The sessions are three to four hours long and take place in a supportive, interactive group setting. The workshop is led by our very own CEO, Jonathan Bedloe.

Who Should Attend
Community and social workers

Healthcare professionals

Volunteers and peer workers

People working with men at risk

Leaders, support staff, or marketing teams for the above programs

Participant Feedback
"I valued the specific focus on men and left with some great resources."

"Great tips that I will be putting into action with my male clients."

"Really appreciated the gendered approach to su***de prevention."

"It’s exciting times at MRT. You’ve probably heard me say it already, but there is so much happening. We’re in the process of finalising our grant deed with the TPS, to formally commit to our funded Building Pathways program. More news to come on this soon. We’ve had a fantastic response to our call for mentors, and we have room for a few more.

Our amazing Board and other volunteers are putting in serious time, and passion evidenced by many of the activities you’ll read about below.

We also have our next Community Conversation in just a couple of weeks. And then we’re all in for ‘What’s Working’ our Inaugural Men’s Health Forum on 10 June (see below). We hope to see as many of you as we can fit into the room - space is limited, but we’ve still got some! We’ll soon be convening a working group for our International Men’s Day Breakfast, and it looks like we may have already secured some significant sponsorship. Get in touch if you’d like to be a part of the working group.

Grab a cuppa and check out our news, and other resources and information we’ve pulled together for this edition. Thanks to the whole team for all the amazing work being done.

Jonathan Bedloe

Theresa here 👋

I think this is a fabulous short video because I think it says so much.
Too often we think people who are struggling mentally need our help, need our advice. That we need to make them better, that they are a problem to be solved. I mean we do this to ourselves as well, seeing ourselves that are problems to be solved.

Well we are not and what is helpful if we meet people where they are at, when we acknowledge where we are at, our capacity.

Theresa here 👋
We at Cygnet Cares Su***de Prevention would like to acknowledge the horrendous mental harm and anguish war causes, not just to those who have had to fight in a war but to all the friends and family affected by either having someone in a war, living in a war zone and all that comes afterwards in the rebuilding.

It is a horrible, horrible business and it causes so, so much hurt and harm.

If today is hard for you, please reach out to someone who may help you. You are not alone.

Hello, Theresa here 💐

One sleep to go 'til the Sail Away event.
Maybe you are decided and will be there or perhaps you aren't sure...

The thing is this is such a lovely event and you may participate as much or as little or as not as all as you'd like. Nobody is going to think you rude, awkward or wrong for choosing to stand or sit up the back and sort of blend into the wall.

Come and chat and share your story with others or choose not to say a word and keep to yourself, both are appropriate and welcome interactions.

But if you are feeling lonely, sad or some such thing please do come.

Theresa here 🥰Even as someone who is a bit aware of these figures to see them visually represented is actually a thing.
