A Mark of Respect

Following the passing of King Harald V of Norway, Marine Rescue Currumbin has lowered the Australian flag to half-mast as a mark of respect and in recognition of the loss of Norway’s much-loved monarch.

Our thoughts are with the Royal Family and the people of Norway at this time of mourning.

September 3rd is observed as Merchant Navy Day, a time to honor and remember the dedicated service and sacrifices made by thousands of Australia’s merchant mariners during wartime.
On this day, the Australian Red Ensign is proudly flown as a symbol of respect and commemoration for their vital contributions.

🌊 A new chapter for Currumbin’s iconic Training Wall! ☀️

Three members of MRQ Currumbin attend the official opening of the recently renewed Currumbin Creek South Training Wall.

Division 14 Councillor Gail O’Neill unveiled the new Sun Spirit sculpture and officially opened the renewed Training Wall.

After more than 50 years protecting Currumbin Beach and the creek entrance, the $7.7 million renewal delivers improved coastal resilience, accessibility, beach and emergency access, along with dune revegetation and new trees.

It was wonderful to see the much-loved Sun Spirit return, with its new sister sculpture proudly welcoming visitors to the area. ☀️

Tuesday Night Training Takes a Different Turn

Tuesday night training at Marine Rescue Currumbin took a different turn — quite literally!

Tonight, members put their practical skills to the test with trailer reversing and boat trailer hook-up practice, led by one of our experienced members, Phil.

Everyone had the opportunity to have a go, with Phil providing guidance and instructions along the way. As confidence grew, so did the level of difficulty, with members tackling increasingly challenging reversing manoeuvres.

It was a great opportunity to develop skills that are essential to our operations, while also building confidence in handling and positioning trailers safely and accurately.

There were plenty of attempts, a few challenges and, most importantly, plenty of learning along the way.

A great night of practical training and teamwork at Marine Rescue Currumbin — proving once again that there is always something new to learn!

Training, preparation and capability — Marine Rescue Currumbin

Sunday was another busy training day for the crew at Marine Rescue Currumbin, with all our vessels and operators continuing to build skills and confidence.

Our primary rescue vessel, Currumbin 31, was put through a range of scenarios, including man overboard, skipper incapacitated, fire onboard and abandon ship. Throughout the exercises, the crew kept our Radio Room updated, providing valuable practical training for our Radio Operators as well as the vessel crew.

Every time we leave and return, we must cross a bar, so bar crossings naturally form an important part of our ongoing training. Regular practice helps build the confidence, knowledge and skills required to operate safely in challenging conditions.

Afterwards, we refuelled and washed down the vessel — a mission in itself when there is no on-water refuelling facility available to us.

We then deployed our Jet Skis for on-water familiarisation — another capability that sets our unit apart and ensures our crews remain confident and proficient across all our rescue platforms.

Importantly, all of our rescue vessels are trailerable, giving Marine Rescue Currumbin the flexibility to deploy our resources where they are needed across the area.

Training like this doesn’t just happen. It takes dedicated volunteers, capable vessels, teamwork and plenty of time on the water.

Burleigh Joeys, Cubs & Scouts Visit Marine Rescue Currumbin

It was such an interactive, hands-on evening, with the kids enthusiastically getting involved in every activity and learning about the important work carried out by our marine rescue volunteers.

Throughout the evening, the group took part in a fantastic range of activities, including:

🚤 Rescue boat ride – getting out on the water and experiencing what it’s like aboard a rescue vessel.

📻 Radio communications – learning about marine radio procedures and how effective communication plays such an important role during a rescue.

🛟 Casualty transfers – having a go at safely moving a casualty using a stretcher.

🪢 Knot tying – learning some practical knots and discovering how useful these skills can be on and around the water.

🦺 Life jacket safety – learning about the correct use and operation of life jackets and why wearing one can make such a difference in an emergency.

🎯 Rescue rope throwing – practising how to accurately throw a rescue rope to someone who may need assistance.

🛟 Hands-on life raft experience – getting up close and learning about the equipment used to help keep people safe on the water.

❓ Question-and-answer session – giving the kids the chance to ask questions, learn more about marine rescue and find out what it takes to be part of a volunteer rescue organisation.

The Joeys, Cubs and Scouts were absolutely amazing throughout the visit. They were extremely well behaved, respectful and enthusiastic, showing plenty of teamwork and curiosity as they worked their way through each activity.

And they certainly weren’t shy when it came to getting involved! The kids were engaged every step of the way, asking questions, having a go and soaking up everything they were being taught. It was wonderful to see them learning valuable water-safety skills while having so much fun at the same time. 🌊👏

As a well-deserved reward for their efforts, everyone received a grab bag filled with Marine Rescue Queensland merchandise. 🎒😊

A very special thank you to all the wonderful leaders and parents who attended and supported the children throughout the evening. Your time, encouragement and assistance are very much appreciated. 👏

And, of course, a huge thank you to the Marine Rescue Queensland members who gave up their time to welcome the group, share their knowledge, demonstrate their equipment and give the kids such a memorable experience. Your passion for marine safety and willingness to educate the next generation is truly appreciated. ❤️

It was certainly a night full of learning, teamwork, laughter and adventure on the water.

Although we may have a little future volunteer on our hands… 😆😆😆

Young Micah, just 5 years old, seemed to love every minute of it and looked like he was ready to sign himself up for volunteering on the weekend! 😂🚤🛟

Who knows — perhaps we were witnessing the beginning of a future Marine Rescue volunteer!

Today is Vietnam Veteran’s Day, a day we honour Vietnam Veterans and remember their sacrifices in what was Australia's longest military involvement in a war.

The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th century. Almost 60,000 Australians fought in the war and more than 500 lost their lives.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, where 108 brave young men from D Company 6RAR resisted an attack of 1,500-2,500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. It would become one of the most extraordinary chapters in Australia's military history.
