As the cooler weather hits (and brrrr, it’s been freezing lately!), many of us are thinking about burning off wood piles, garden waste, or old rubbish. It’s very common for our native wildlife to make homes in these spots - including possums, gliders, lizards, snakes, bandicoots, birds, and even echidnas!

Before you light up:
• Take the time to carefully move the pile piece by piece during daylight
• Watch and listen for any movement or signs of nests
• Give any hidden critters plenty of time to get away safely

A few careful minutes can prevent a tragedy. We know how tempting it is to just get it done quickly, especially when it’s cold… but our wildlife needs us to be vigilant.
Let’s keep our local animals safe while we warm up responsibly.
Please share this to help spread the word 💚

This gorgeous little Wally joey was the victim of a hbc. Unfortunately Mark hit her mum, but stopped and found this girl had come out of the pouch. He bundled her up and drove her to me. She had a cut on her head and mild concussion, but no other injuries, so a very lucky girl. She had a couple of days here before going to another carer, to be buddied up with another Wally joey the same size.
As hard as it is to pass them on, having a buddy is so important, so it's all about doing what's right for the joey

R.I.P grandpa 🐨
I knew there was something not right when I saw the pics of this boy. When I arrived and saw him, my heart broke.
A very old koala, in poor condition. His fur was horrible due to no longer grooming himself. His teeth ground down so he wasn't able to eat...he was starving to death.
I'm sure there are many of his offspring in the area he called home

A sad rescue last night...
Mum koala and her backrider little boy were unfortunately hit by a truck. Bub took the brunt and was killed on impact. By the time I arrived, mum had managed to get to the top of a tree, out of reach for flagging. I've been back this morning and she's still there so will check on her again this arvo.
Two amazing people stayed on scene last night.
Mary, who saw the accident, stopped and made the call...despite having 3 kids in the car.
And...the truck driver, Adam. He drove further up the road and found a safe place to pull over, unhook the two trailers and came back. He was extremely upset, but accidents happen, and when driving large, heavy vehicles, stopping isn't possible.
But...it's what people do afterwards which counts.
Thankyou so much Mary and Adam for caring

I'm so sorry big boy. He was one of the biggest boys I've seen for a while.
I got a call for a koala on the side of the road, suspected hbc. Nicole stayed roadside, ringing when I was halfway, to say he was heading up a tree. In true koala style, he went just above the height of my flagging pole. With a bit of ingenuity, Nicole managed to get the pole above his head...success, down he came, then stopped just out of my reach. She did an amazing job for her 1st koala rescue. After a while, i finally had him in the basket. Once home, I was able to see an issue with one eye, along with grazing on his chin. But, it was clear he'd deteriorated on the drive home. He passed away shortly after, most likely from internal injuries
I can't thank Nicole enough for her help

Wednesday evening, still daylight, people getting home from work, finishing up footy practise and playing at the dog park. Meanwhile a vile individual, a 67yr old Koroit local is making the disturbing decision to go out of his way to injure a helpless koala, tie a rope around it's neck and the other end to his tow ball and proceed to drive 100M or so dragging the koala behind him down a residential Koroit street to the oval and dump it still alive & writhing in pain. The vile individual removes the rope and takes it with him leaving the koala and witnesses to deal with the horrific situation in front of them.

A volunteer rescuer from WV and Mosswood attends to collect the poor koala and then takes it to Mosswood Wildlife Sanctuary as our volunteer Wildlife vet, James is already at the clinic treating other wildlife.

From confusion, anger and then just heartbreak as we start assessing the extent of this poor animals injuries and realising the unfathomable pain this koala has been left in with injuries incompatible with life, leaving us to do the only humane thing left for this poor koala and euthanise him. 💔🐨

The despicable excuse for a human who did this was found, interviewed, released and is expected to be charged on summons.

The individual who was able to think and act upon the disgusting urge to do this to an innocent animal in such a brazen attack is someone that shouldn't be let of lightly.

We thank everyone who reported what they saw, who was part of ending this animals suffering and who was part of broadcasting this story. 🌼

R.I.P beautiful girls 😢😢
This girl was left on the road, to have her face run over multiple times, leaving only bone where her nose and face should have been
Meanwhile, her little joey was left to suffer in her pouch.
She was cold when I got her out, in pain from a broken ankle
Thankyou to the one person who cared enough to make the call, at least this little girl is no longer suffering

JUST IN - COMMUNITY OUTRAGE OVER HORRIFIC KOALA ATTACK, AS GLOBAL ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANISATION CALLS FOR LEGAL ACTION.

A Koala that was allegedly dragged through the centre of the township of Koroit attached to a tow ball has been euthanised.

It's alleged the animal was dragged along King Street by a rope, before the owner of the ute, an older Toyota Hilux, took it to Victoria Park and left it there.

Volunteers from Mosswood Wildlife scrambled to pick up the badly injured animal, where the organisations volunteer Vet then assessed it at its wildlife rescue centre.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has expressed its anger about the incident.

“This is a horrific and senseless act of cruelty. It is beyond belief that someone would do this to any animal, let alone an iconic koala."IFAW Oceania Head of Programs Josey Sharrad said.
