LiveLighter Aged Care Games North Metro 2026 a Wonderful Success
Kingsway Indoor Stadium Wednesday, 2 September 2026
The 22nd North Metro LiveLighter Aged Care Games, proudly supported by our naming rights partner LiveLighter Healthway, were a tremendous success, bringing together aged care teams from across the North Metro region for a day filled with fun, friendly competition, and community spirit.
For many participants, the Aged Care Games are a highlight of the year. Facilities invest considerable time and effort supporting their residents through regular training sessions, and their enthusiasm was on full display throughout the event.
Although unable to officially open the games due to conflicting commitments, Cr Paul Miles, Deputy Mayor of the City of Wanneroo, visited later in the morning and was highly impressed by the energy, participation, and organisation of the day. SRCWA extends its sincere thanks to Cr Paul Miles and the City of Wanneroo for their ongoing support.
The event was expertly MC’d by SRCWA State President Colin Steer, who also coordinated volunteer briefings to ensure the smooth running of activities throughout the day. Participants and spectators were also treated to entertaining lunchtime music from Kevin Bennett, whose performance was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Inspiration Shines at Rockingham Live_Lighter Aged Care Games
The Baldivis Recreation Centre was buzzing with smiles, cheers and friendly rivalry on Thursday, 20 August 2026, as the SRCWA Rockingham LiveLighter Aged Care Games celebrated community, care and the joy of taking part. Proudly supported by naming rights partner LiveLighter Healthway, the event was a wonderful success.
Eight energetic teams joined in games created especially for seniors who may require care, bringing plenty of laughter, teamwork and determination to the day. From the first activity to the final score, participants gave it their all and kept the atmosphere lively.
SRCWA Executive Officer Dawn Yates warmly welcomed everyone before introducing City of Rockingham Mayor Lorna Buchan, who officially opened the Games. SRCWA sincerely appreciated her support for this special event. SRCWA State President Colin Steer kept the day moving with energy and good humour, making sure the fun never missed a beat.
After four fun-filled hours of spirited competition, the winners were:
Third Place: Gracehaven Legends Baptist Care
Second Place: Bethanie SMSC The Royals
First Place: AEGIS Banksia – Banksia Bunch
Brightwater Oaks Card Sharks also dealt themselves a winning hand, taking home the Best Presented Team Award with their fantastic playing-card-themed table and costumes.
A true highlight of the day was welcoming back 102-year-old competitor Margaret Smith from Banksia Park, whose participation brought an extra dose of inspiration to everyone in attendance.
SRCWA extends a heartfelt thank you to its wonderful staff and volunteers, especially the team from Wooroloo, whose hard work with setup, scoring and pack-down helped make the day shine.

Successful Scams Information Session Held in Northam
On Friday, 14 August 2026, SRCWA Tech Savvy Seniors Program Manager Martin Yates and Richard Dermody travelled from Perth to Northam to deliver an informative and engaging Scams Information Session for the SRCWA Avon Branch community.
The session attracted a strong turnout, reflecting the growing community interest in understanding the latest scam threats and learning how to stay safe in an increasingly digital world.

Understanding How AI Is Being Used by Scammers
A key focus of the presentation was the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by criminals to commit fraud and deceive unsuspecting victims.
Attendees learned how scammers are now using AI to:
• Create convincing emails, text messages and websites.
• Clone voices to impersonate family members, friends and trusted organisations.
• Develop deepfake audio and video content.
• Conduct sophisticated investment, banking and online shopping scams.
• Target individuals through social media and online marketplaces.

Maintain a Healthy Level of Scepticism
One of the key messages throughout the session was the importance of “Maintaining a Healthy Level of Scepticism.”
Rather than reacting immediately to unexpected messages, phone calls or requests for money, attendees were encouraged to:
• Stop and think before responding.
• Verify information independently “Go Back to a Legitimate Source of Truth.
• Be cautious of urgent requests.
• Confirm the identity of callers and message senders.
• Seek advice from trusted family members, friends or organisations when unsure.
This simple approach can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to scams and fraud.

Strong Community Engagement
The session generated excellent discussion, with attendees sharing personal experiences and raising questions about current scam trends and emerging technologies.
The high level of participation demonstrated the community’s commitment to learning more about online safety and protecting themselves, their families and their friends from increasingly sophisticated scam attempts.

The Live_Lighter Aged Care Games Metropolitan Event, held on 6 August 2026 at Belmont Oasis, was a fantastic celebration of active ageing, community spirit, and friendly competition. The event brought together 12 teams from aged care facilities across the metropolitan area, all competing with enthusiasm, determination, and great sportsmanship for the prestigious metropolitan title.

The Games were officially opened by Mayor Robert Rossi - City of Belmont , who welcomed participants and supporters and highlighted the importance of events that encourage healthy ageing, social connection, and community engagement. Guiding the day’s proceedings was SRCWA State President Colin Steer, who did an outstanding job as Master of Ceremonies, keeping the program running smoothly and ensuring the energy remained high throughout the event.

Competitors embraced the opportunity to represent their facilities, displaying teamwork, resilience, and plenty of smiles along the way. The atmosphere was filled with encouragement, laughter, and genuine camaraderie, making the day a memorable experience for everyone involved.

The competition was incredibly close, with the Hale Storm securing first place by the narrowest of margins to claim the 2026 Metropolitan title.

Celebrating Our Most Senior Competitor
A special recognition was given to Doug Roberts from the Aegis Balmoral Rainbow Royals Team, our most senior competitor. At 99 years young and set to celebrate his 100th birthday in October, Doug inspired everyone with his enthusiasm, participation, and positive attitude. His involvement was a wonderful example of the spirit of the Games and a reminder that age is no barrier to staying active and engaged.

Thank You to Our Supporters and Volunteers
A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated Tea Ladies, who worked tirelessly throughout the day serving tea and coffee to an estimated 300 attendees. Their warm hospitality helped create a welcoming environment for participants, spectators, volunteers, and officials alike.

Our lunchtime entertainment was provided by Michael Barbaro, whose engaging and electrifying performance had people dancing, singing, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Michael’s energy and enthusiasm added a special touch to the day, and we sincerely thank him for helping create such a vibrant atmosphere.
We would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our volunteers whose hard work behind the scenes made the event possible. A special mention goes to the wonderful team from Juniper and the trusties from Wooroloo, who generously assisted with setup, scoring, and pack down. Their commitment, teamwork, and willingness to help were instrumental in delivering such a successful event.
The 2026 LiveLighter Aged Care Games Metropolitan Event was a remarkable day of achievement, friendship, and fun. As we get older, eating well becomes even more important. Iron helps our blood carry oxygen around the body, which supports energy, concentration, immune function and overall wellbeing. Low iron can contribute to tiredness, weakness, poor concentration and a higher risk of infection, so including iron-rich foods regularly is a great healthy habit.
Good sources of iron include lean red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, legumes such as lentils, chickpeas and kidney beans, tofu, wholegrain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds, and dark leafy greens like spinach, silver beet and broccoli. LiveLighter also recommends pairing plant-based iron foods with vitamin C foods—like tomato, capsicum, citrus, berries or broccoli—to help your body absorb more iron.
A simple iron-friendly meal could be:
* Lentil and veggie soup with wholegrain toast
* Tuna or salmon salad with tomato and capsicum
* Lean beef stir-fry with broccoli and brown rice
* Baked beans on wholegrain toast with a side of fruit
Tip: Try to avoid tea or coffee straight around mealtimes, as they can reduce iron absorption. If you’re feeling unusually tired or concerned about your iron levels, speak with your GP before taking supplements.

SRCWA Healthy Lifestyles Seniors Event – Cambridge 2026

The Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc. was delighted to present the SRCWA Healthy Lifestyles Seniors Event in partnership with the Town of Cambridge on Monday 27 July 2026 at The Boulevard Centre, 99 The Boulevard, Floreat. More than 100 seniors were in attendance, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere for the day.

SRCWA extends its sincere thanks to the Town of Cambridge for its continued support and partnership in helping deliver this valuable community event for local seniors. The day provided an opportunity for attendees to connect, learn and explore practical ways to support their health, wellbeing and independence.

The event was MC’d by SRCWA State President Colin Steer and officially opened by Town of Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack. Mayor Mack welcomed attendees and shared an enlightening video highlighting the importance and impact of volunteering within the Town of Cambridge community.

Attendees then enjoyed a healthy eating demonstration by Sarah from Grow Cook Eat, who shared practical ideas for nutritious, accessible and enjoyable food choices. The session included helpful tips and tastings, encouraging participants to think about simple ways to include healthy eating habits in everyday life in line with the ethos of Live_Lighter Healthway.

This was followed by a presentation from Scott Ewen of Onyx Movement - Perth on healthy ageing, movement and falls prevention. The session provided attendees with useful information and strategies to support confidence, activity and independence.

Static displays were also available throughout the event, offering resources, information and opportunities for attendees to speak with service providers.

At 12.00 noon, the national test of the new emergency warning system, AusAlert, sounded, with everyone’s mobile devices ringing at the same time. The unexpected moment became a shared experience for attendees and highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness and community awareness.

Tea and coffee were available on arrival, followed by a healthy and tasty lunch provided by the Town of Cambridge. This gave everyone the opportunity to socialise, ask questions and enjoy the friendly community atmosphere. The event concluded with the drawing of door prizes, adding to the positive spirit of the day. SRCWA thanks the Town of Cambridge Seniors Services Team, Mayor Gary Mack, all presenters, exhibitors, volunteers and attendees for contributing to another successful Healthy Lifestyles Seniors Event. Events such as these continue to demonstrate the value of partnership, connection and practical information in supporting seniors to live active, healthy and engaged lives. SRCWA also thanks and acknowledges the ongoing support of the WA Government.

SRCWA was thrilled to be invited to join the celebrations marking 35 years of Have a Go News, an outstanding family-owned publication that has made a lasting contribution to our semiors community.
