The Victorian state election will be held on Saturday 28th November. Victorian Socialists are running candidates across the state. Today, we're proud to introduce our candidate for Point Cook, Taylor Laine.

Taylor writes: "Working as a hairdresser I've had the opportunity to connect and understand the struggles of my community. From this I've come to understand how working people in Melbourne's west feel they've been left behind by society at large.

"It’s something we can see all around us. That no matter if you follow the rules and goals we're taught make for a good life - work full time, buy a house, raise a family - many of us will still be churned up and broken by an economic system geared towards enriching the wealthiest few at the cost of everyone else."

"Whether by taking action on climate change, standing against racism, advocating for the q***r community, or standing up for peace and justice for Palestine and standing against the rise of the far right - I won't give up fighting for a better, fairer world."

Getting ready to elect delegates to the founding (federal) conference of the Socialist Party from Melbourne's northern metropolitan region - an introduction by VS campaign director Jess Lenehan, followed by discussion and then on to the voting!

Meetings like this are happening across Melbourne today, and (via Zoom) in regional Victoria tomorrow. VS members will have received emails will all the details you need to nominate as a delegate and participate in the meetings. Information is also available via the members' portal on our website.

With an election in November, and new VS branches popping up everywhere - it's a great time to get involved. Join us, and help take up the fight against inequality, war, environmental destruction, and all the other afflictions of capitalism today. (link in comments)

The Victorian state election will be held on Saturday 28th November. Victorian Socialists are running candidates across the state. Today, we're proud to introduce our candidate for Brunswick, Naomi Farmer.

Naomi is a disability support worker who grew up in the La Trobe valley before moving to Melbourne to attend university. She's been a socialist and community activist for more than 20 years - involved in campaigns ranging from Palestine solidarity, refugee rights, and the campaign for marriage equality.

Naomi writes: "When the Hazelwood mine fire - an environmental industrial disaster - occurred in my hometown, I wrote the first news story, called the first protest and helped organise a community campaign that is still ongoing.

"My experience has been that it's only when people stand together and fight back against the destructive economic and political realities of capitalism today that we can start to win change."

A few pics from yesterday's rally to defend and extend public housing - in opposition to Labor's plan to demolish much of what remains of public housing in Victoria in the midst of a major housing and homelessness crisis!

Some reflections from VS candidate for Richmond Chris Dite, who spoke at the rally (Insta: .dite.vs):

"At today’s rally against Labor’s demolition of public housing there was a real mood of hope and possibility. Residents’ associations across the city are getting organised and starting to fight back.

The last time we stopped the state government selling off public housing we did it by joining forces: residents’ associations, trade unions, and other community groups formed a block too hard to argue with.

The odds are harder this time. But Labor is reliant on the votes of the very people it wants to sell out to its private developer friends, and so it’s vulnerable. We need to expand the fightback onto all the estates, and into all the unions.

If you want to get involved in the fight to save and expand public housing (and for a world where housing is for living, not speculating in) join Victorian Socialists! Our next Richmond branch meeting is this 6.30pm Tuesday 2 June .melbourne 310 Smith St, Collingwood."

Decent result for the Queensland Socialists in their first electoral outing. Liam Parry (who was listed as an independent because the party just missed out on registering in time) coming in fourth in a field of nine candidates with 3.8% of first preference votes. Well done comrades! 🙌
