An Australian Crown, not a President

UMGB - United Monarchy of Great Britain.

Envisage the British Isles as a political and economic federation united as four constitutional monarchies. When a monarch dies or abdicates, the crown passes to the heir of the next country. No country would take precedence over the other.

Ireland is united.

England is far more populous and economically significant than the other three countries combined. A national government would carefully balance this reality with the political autonomy and rights of the other three countries. Each country would maintain their parliaments or assemblies and the Commons would have representatives from England alone. These bodies would be responsible for domestic departments such as police, schools, hospitals, as in the States of Australia and the U.S.A.. Westminster would be the seat of an Upper House (formerly the House of Lords) in which each country has equal representation, like the Australian Senate. The national (UMGB) federal or Commonwealth government would decide on matters such as defence, foreign policy, trade and immigration. This Executive branch of government would consist of a cabinet of heads of government and ministers from the four countries - 6 from the three smaller countries and 5 from England; an 11 person cabinet.

The English throne has a clear succession line.
Scotland's monarch could be the Jacobite claimant to the English throne. Ireland and Wales do not have obvious descendants, however, the YouTube Channel 'Useful Charts' suggests they could be identified. The Welsh line appears to flow into the Tudor line.

The Australian Monarchist League has reminded us "The strength of our constitutional monarchy lies in the Sovereign’s strict neutrality".

The League has pointed out that King Charles III's life-long forays into public policy - a contrast to his mother, Queen Elizabeth - is more a failing of successive UK governments. True, perhaps, but we have no say in such matters, just as the UK government has no say in our affairs.

To those who have expressed displeasure at the King's redefining his role as 'Defender of the Faith', the League rightly warns us not to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater' and become a republic.

An Australian Crown, modeled on the very limited, symbolic and neutral role of our Governor General, would not be prone to the vagaries of the British Crown and government. Therefore, Australia should seriously consider a pathway to becoming an independent constitutional monarchy.

I have outlined such a pathway here and in my new up-coming book. I suggest it begin with every state transferring the power of appointing their Governors to the Governor General. I envisage the process taking 25 years, culminating in a referendum before the Commonwealth's 150th anniversary in 2051.

Charles has always used his position to pursue issues he feels strongly about. His mother was much more restrained and apolitical. In Australia, our Governor-General is very apolitical and it is inconceivable that it would assume a position on a public policy issue because the GG's role is to only exercise discretion in the use of the Reserve Powers.

"The King of England’s official job now includes the protection of faith “within the multi-faith nation,” according to a newly published description released by Buckingham Palace." - 27th June, 2026.

This has been some time coming, and not entirely inconsistent with with mother's views.

Many patriots are very upset about it and are calling for him to either Defend the Christian Faith, abdicate, or the monarchy should be abolished.

It would be very unfortunate if we lost the monarchy because of multiculturalism. The Left would clock it up as a win.

It's not the monarchy that's the problem. Multiculturalism is, and he didn't choose it. He is, essentially, doing his job of representing and uniting his subjects. If you don't like it, oppose multiculturalism and write to Buckingham Palace and complain. The Royal Family tend to lag behind social change, doing what they think it widely accepted.

It is good to see Bridget McKenzie raising Senator Thorpe's very public disavowing of her allegiance to the King, to his face, on top of her mis-speaking the Oath. I do hope more MPs step up to the plate.

The apathy in parliament to uphold the constitution is truly dangerous. However, that even the Teals and Coalition are complicit is telling.

The AML could be in quasi-denial about the public's mood with regard to the monarchy. Parliament does not have a good reputation for accurately representing public opinion. So what do the polls say? It's true to say that with all the turmoil going on in politics these days, many people have no appetite for unnecessary change. However, the debate about our monarchy is being had, whether we like it or not.

One of the great strengths of the political tradition we have inherited from Britain is a talent for incremental change. Isn't the AML failing to lead by not entertaining discussion about the possibilities for change that might improve the current system? Its call for joint nominations (by the PM and OL) for the Governor General is a very admirable exception to that. But more can be done, by for example, extending that suggestion to the States. The AML could also suggest that nominations for G-G be chosen from the existing pool of State Governors, past and present. There is even more that could be done, but I'll leave it at that for now.

The Katter Matter is going to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to loyalty to Australia vs Britain. In doing so the constitution will be called into question. If the AML isn't careful, it could tip the balance in favor of republicanism by being too inflexible. Many Australians rightfully question the Sovereign being in absentee and being British in all but name. How about the contradiction of dual Australian-British citizens not being able to stand for parliament when the King is British? Personally, I'm okay with it. In fact, I think dual Australian-British citizen should be the exception to S 44(i), but pragmatism has me thinking ahead. If we value constitutional monarchy, we had better consider the pathway to a home-grown Australian monarchy.

It is surely Parliament’s worst kept secret that Bob Katter could be unlawfully sitting and voting in the House of Representatives.

Canada, like Australia, had better think carefully about what changes are really necessary and what would be a genuine improvement on the existing arrangement. What exactly is wrong with it? The fact the Sovereign is in absentee seems to concern a lot of people. Yet nobody considers the possibility of having our own, separate line of succession.

A March 2026 Research Co. poll shows Canada’s republic debate is far from settled.

While 33% of Canadians said they would prefer an elected head of state, 29% wanted Canada to remain a monarchy. The gap between the two camps had narrowed to just four points, down from 23 points in March 2024.

Perhaps more importantly, 23% said they did not care either way, and 15% were undecided. That means 38% were not firmly committed to either side.

For constitutional monarchists, this is a reminder that public understanding matters. Many voters are not strongly republican or strongly monarchist. They are uncertain, disengaged, or waiting to be persuaded.

The poll also found that 52% of Canadians expected the country to remain a monarchy 20 years from now.
