There's a notice heading for your letterbox that most people skim and set aside. It's worth a proper read this time.

New property valuations have just gone out for Burnie. The notice from the Valuer-General is the one that sets the clock ticking, and from the day it lands you have 60 days to lodge an objection if you think your valuation isn't right.

Here's the part that's easy to miss. The time to act is while that valuation notice is in your hand, not later. Once the window closes, it's closed.

And it's worth knowing where this sits. Your valuation is set by the Office of the Valuer-General, not council. So if something looks off to you, they're who you check with, and they're who you lodge with.

If your valuation notice hasn't arrived by mid-June, give the Office of the Valuer-General a call and check in. Better to know than to wonder.

Swipe through, and save this for when your notice turns up. If you'd rather get the heads up before these things land, follow along on my page.

What's something about how rates and valuations work that you've always wanted explained properly? Tell me below.

Too many men don't ask for help. That is not a small problem. It is a community one.

For having an uncomfortable conversation with someone is far better than never being able to have a conversation again. This Men's Health Week, Jake is running 7km a day for 7 days to raise money for the , a registered mental health and su***de prevention charity.

Each day, seven men across Australia loose their lives to su***de. The Shaka Project deliver free workshops to sporting clubs, schools, and communities across Australia. Their approach is straightforward: start the conversation.

I am backing Jake and I think you should too.

Men's mental health matters in Burnie. If there are men in your life carrying things they cannot put into words, this is an organisation doing real work to change that.

Please donate if you can, and share this if you know someone who needs to see it.

Everyone's got one. The cafe, the lookout, the walk, the business doing it quietly and brilliantly.

The place you always end up recommending.

I want to hear yours. Partly because I'm nosy, partly because the best of Burnie spreads by word of mouth, and this is word of mouth.

Drop your spot below. Tell me why it's the one.

🇦🇺 I remember when I became a citizen. It was a deeply personal commitment, of belonging and of shared responsibility.

Watching others make that same commitment this afternoon, in a room full of people they love, officially choosing this place as home. It gets me every time.

Today we welcomed doctors, engineers, nurses, parents and their children as citizens of Australia and Burnie.

Burnie is all the richer for them calling our City home.

Sunday me is doing future me a favour.

I’ve learned the hard way that I can’t run a week well if I haven’t set it up first. A bit of prep on a Sunday is the difference between a week that runs me and a week I actually run.

What’s your Sunday reset? The thing you do to get ready for the week ahead. I’m always after a better system.

It’s National Donor Week for lifebloodau from June 8-14th.

Demand for blood and plasma continues to grow, including for our most vulnerable little children in hospitals across the Country.

To recognise Australia’s generous blood donors and highlight the impact they have on the lives of young kids, Lifeblood is releasing a limited-edition bandage inspired by drawings from children at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide. You can have a look at it down below.

It features a wonky donkey, a smiling crocodile and a cute little frog.

There is still plenty of time to donate, if you can. Between now and July 19th, you’ll walk away with a special bandage and the knowledge that you’ve literally saved a life.

Check your eligibility to donate and make your appointment today at https://www.lifeblood.com.au/donors/blood-plasma-platelets/eligibility/quiz

The budget is almost finalised and will be coming to Councillors at this month’s meeting (June 23rd). Each year, the same question comes up: where is my rates money actually going?

Here’s a look at SOME of what your rates delivered this last financial year.

Council events: The Christmas Parade and New Year’s Eve celebrations in December, the Happy Hoppy Easter Eggstravaganza at Burnie Arts Centre in April. Burnie Bright Night at Wivenhoe in May. All free. For families. For kids to just be kids.

Council upgrades and maintenance: Roads and footpaths maintained year-round across the city. Parks, reserves, and public spaces kept safe and accessible for everyone. Projects like Shorewell creek pedestrian bridge replacement, cleaning across the municipality and new pathways throughout our parks.

Community grants and sponsorship: Funding that supports clubs, groups, and initiatives that make this city worth living in. Events like Rugby Tasmania Women’s Magic Round, Burnie 10 & 321Go and New Year’s Day Sports.

Plans and Strategies: Strategies like our Playground Strategy that puts proper investment behind the places families actually use. Shorewell Park is first, then West Beach playground.

Arts and Culture: A cultural hub that punches well above its weight for a city our size with Council supported events and programs that give local artists, performers, and makers a place to do their work in front of their own community.

This is rates money showing up in the places that matter.

What else do you want to see it go toward? Tell me below.

Burnie's October election is taking shape.

Colleagues are stepping up for Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Councillor. There are some new faces putting their hands up for the first time too.

There's something I genuinely love about this. People who care enough about their community to say: I want to be part of shaping it. That takes courage, and it deserves to be acknowledged.

To everyone who has announced so far, congratulations. Burnie is lucky to have people who want to show up for it.

As for my own plans, stay tuned.

No 480 page agenda tonight. Just four things from the workshop worth knowing.

Council in the Car đźš—

We are updating our community grants policy to make it easier and more transparent to apply for. If you are part of a local organisation or community group, this is worth paying attention to.

We are deep in the process of finalising the budget. More to come on that soon.

More Council events are coming. Burnie Bright Night was just the beginning.

Our Mayor and General Manager updated us on a range of matters tonight, including plans to remove the old train lines at the foreshore.

Make sure you follow so you don’t miss next week’s update
