🇵🇬 THE ROAD THAT CONNECTS A NATION

Ten days. Approximately 830–840 kilometres. One historic journey through the heart of Papua New Guinea.

What makes this journey particularly significant is that Prime Minister Hon. James Marape is personally driving through some of our country’s most remote and challenging terrain—from Port Moresby to Kaintiba, through Morobe and the Highlands, and back through Kikori.

This is more than a road trip. It is a powerful expression of the Connect PNG vision—bringing communities closer to schools, healthcare, markets, services and new opportunities.

The proposed PANGU Highway — Papua–Niugini Unity Highway, linking our two major cities, Port Moresby and Lae, adds an important symbol of national unity and connection.

As we approach 51 years of Independence, this journey reminds us that our future is about connecting every corner of PNG and ensuring no community is left behind.

Preserving Our Shared History 🇵🇬🇦🇺

I was pleased to host a working lunch in Brisbane with Hon. Graeme Nao Boge, Councillor of the Motu Koita Assembly. His constituency includes Badihagwa Cemetery—historically known as the Old European or Colonial Cemetery—in Port Moresby.

Our discussion focused on raising awareness of the cemetery’s historical significance, including as the burial place of Sir Hubert Murray and other notable individuals. We also explored opportunities to progressively restore and maintain the site as a dignified place of remembrance for families and a historically significant destination for visitors and tourists.

Councillor Boge has been actively pursuing this important work within his community, and we discussed ways in which his efforts could be further supported and encouraged.

We were also joined by Mr Derek Brown, former DFAT State Director for Queensland and now Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Having grown up in Papua New Guinea, Derek brings a deep knowledge of Port Moresby and the Motu Koitabu people.

Our conversation also considered the broader Queensland–Papua New Guinea Memorandum of Understanding and its important people-to-people, government-to-government and business-to-business dimensions.

Preserving our shared history means ensuring that significant places such as Badihagwa Cemetery are respected, protected and valued for generations to come.

🇵🇬 Building PNG’s Next Generation of Leaders! 🇦🇺

A proud moment to welcome Chief Migration Officer, Mr. Welligton Navasivu, and five of the 14 PNG officers who graduated today after completing an Australia-supported national security and intelligence training program delivered in three two-week blocks over the year. Today marked the completion of the third and final block.

Mr. Navasivu had just returned from Canberra, where he completed a similar senior management and leadership program, delivered in three three-day blocks, in time to join the officers’ graduation in Brisbane.

Representing PNG Immigration, Defence, the Department of the Prime Minister and NEC, and the National Intelligence Organisation, the officers also met with our PNG Immigration team at the Consulate.

These programs are about more than training. They strengthen PNG’s capacity to address evolving challenges such as cybercrime, transnational crime, people smuggling and other national security threats, while preparing our officers and leaders for greater responsibilities.

A wonderful example of the PNG–Australia partnership in action—building capability, strengthening institutions and investing in our people. 🇵🇬🇦🇺

Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme LSU–AE Workshop was successfully held from 24–26 August 2026 at Stamford Plaza Brisbane.
Hosted by the Australian Government in partnership with the PALM Scheme Approved Employers Association, the three-day workshop brought together Labour Sending Unit representatives and senior officials from ten Pacific countries and Timor-Leste, Heads of Mission, Approved Employers, representatives from DFAT and DEWR, and PALM Scheme support organisations.
Papua New Guinea was represented by Ms Hakaua Harry, Director, and her delegation, alongside Acting High Commissioner Mr Joe Warison and the Consul-General of Papua New Guinea in Brisbane, Mr Reatau M. Rau.
Participants engaged in government roundtables, employer-led discussions and strategic sessions focused on strengthening collaboration, improving recruitment processes, preparing and supporting workers, promoting worker wellbeing, and enhancing reintegration outcomes.
Ms Harry also delivered presentations highlighting Papua New Guinea’s labour mobility priorities and the PALM Prepare program.
The workshop further strengthened partnerships across the PALM network and supported practical improvements to recruitment, worker welfare and the overall delivery of the Scheme.

The Papua New Guinea Consulate General in Brisbane welcomed Chief Migration Officer Mr Wesley Navasivu and Motu Koita Assembly Deputy Chairman Hon. Babani Harry during separate courtesy visits this week.

Discussions focused on strengthening PNG-Queensland cooperation in immigration, mobility, workforce development, education and skills training. They also addressed preparations for increased travel associated with the PNG Chiefs’ entry into the NRL in 2028, the PNG-Australia Defence Treaty, major resource developments and PNG’s growing demand for skilled professionals.

Further opportunities were explored under the PNG–Queensland Memorandum of Understanding, including employment and education pathways for Motu Koita communities and potential sister-local-government partnerships with Queensland regions.

The Consulate General sincerely thanks both leaders for their constructive engagement, which supports stronger government and community ties while creating practical opportunities for the people of Papua New Guinea and Australia. 🇦🇺🤝🇵🇬

PNG National Repentance Day – 26 August

Today, Papua New Guineans in Brisbane and across Queensland join our fellow citizens at home in observing National Repentance Day — a special day dedicated to prayer, repentance, spiritual reflection and seeking God’s guidance for our nation.

National Repentance Day was first announced and came into effect in 2007 under the leadership of Papua New Guinea’s founding father and former Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, and has been observed annually on 26 August.

This day carries even greater significance in the context of Papua New Guinea’s Christian identity. On 12 March 2025, the Parliament of Papua New Guinea enacted a constitutional amendment formally recognising PNG as a Christian nation, affirming the important place of Christian faith in our national identity and values.

As a mark of our respect for this significant national day, the Consulate General of Papua New Guinea in Brisbane is closed today to allow our staff and the wider PNG community to observe this day in prayer, reflection and repentance.

Let us pray for forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, peace and unity in our families, communities and nation. Let us pray for our leaders, our churches and our families, and for wisdom and strength to build a better Papua New Guinea.

For those of us living away from home, may this day renew our faith, strengthen our connection to PNG, and remind us of our shared responsibility to our people and our country.

May we humble ourselves before God, seek His guidance and place the future of Papua New Guinea in His hands.

Happy National Repentance Day to all Papua New Guineans in Brisbane and across Queensland.
