The Better Buranda Project

The Better Buranda Project Soon to welcome thousand of new residents to join our Buranda/Gabba/Stones Corner village. We must balance new development with supportive infrastructure!

This page was prompted by the development proposal for a site on the corner of Cowley Street and Logan Road in Buranda (Woolloongabba).... next to the crazy roundabout at the end of O'Keefe Street. https://pdonline.brisbane.qld.gov.au/masterviewUI/modules/ApplicationMaster/default.aspx?page=wrapper&key=A004231122

Together with the community’s support and advocacy we fight against this development

, and won, with the state government buying back the land and handing it over to the education department in early 2020. We will continue to raise issues about local development through this page. Development of the Buranda / Gabba / Stones Corner area is inevitable, and desirable. However, we hope that it does not come at the cost of the thriving village community we already have, and that a plan is in place to accommodate the very real issues surrounding the arrival of thousands of new residents, regular flooding, increasing vehicle traffic and new threats to pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Developers are at it again in , where Pikos Group is pushing the boundaries on heights. Not satisfied with 15 storey approvals (the local height limit) he’s put in an application to increase his latest development an extra 2 and 3 storeys.

Enough is enough…

🤯Have you heard???

The developer behind the towers approved at 108 Lambert St is trying to increase the number of stories and apartments. ‼️

Despite being given permission to build 215 apartments in two 15-storey towers, developer Pikos Group developments wants more.

He’s now seeking an extra two storeys on one tower and an extra three on the other, and plans to cram an extra 24 apartments – but guess what, there will only be an additional 4 carparks.

The application is impact assessable, which means you have a chance to have your say. Make sure you put in a submission before 28 November. 🖋

The application number is A006625230. Read the details of the application at https://developmenti.brisbane.qld.gov.au

This is a bit of a red herring from the state government — Sydney residents living closer to the airport chose to do so. Residents living under the new Brisbane Airport flight paths that came in with the new parallel runway had no say in it.

Sydney also has a curfew, which is a good idea. No-one’s saying stop the planes: they’re just saying be respectful about it (oh and tell the truth in community consultation and enforce the rules about flight corridors and heights). 😡😡😡

train station will be closed from January 8, 2024, and reopen in mid-2025 for much-needed disability upgrades.

I’m not sure how accurate the artist impressions are, but it looks like the current path though from Logan Rd will disappear and be replaced by a path that goes through to Gillingham St, and will then connect to the platform via stairs and a lift.

It seems over complicated — Queensland Rail say they consulted with residents on the design. Did you have a say??

Will you help your Kangaroo Point & East Brisbane neighbours?

A new petition has been created calling on the Queensland Government to move the 2032 Olympic Athletics to a more sustainable venue and save taxpayers $2,700,000,000. Yep that’s an extraordinary amount of money that could be diverted to fixing youth crime, our housing crisis, healthcare systems etc!

By keeping the opening and closing ceremonies at the Gabba, but switching out the athletics for a more suitable sport that fits into the existing gabba space, they will not need to resume Raymond Park, (pineapple park) (which also includes bulldozing family homes) just to create a warm up track, nor demolish East Brisbane State School, as the major reason for the rebuild is to enable a larger field to be built so that it can accommodate an athletics track.

This time we have created an official parliamentary petition. Can you please consider signing and sharing far and wide? Only people power will stop this abomination…

🟠 BURANDA ROUNDABOUT UPDATE 🟠

Over the Christmas break, we hit over 500 signatures on the petition to fix the Buranda roundabout! Can you help us get to 800?

As you might recall, last year, developer Wee Hur put in a new development application (DA) for the site, which made some improvements (a drop in the number of car parks) and a few set-backs (an aged care facility replaced with a commercial building, there seems to be increases in building height and gross floor area, and no commitment to public housing). I'll pop a link below with the overview.

Crucially, the proposal makes little to no attempts to properly fix the Buranda roundabout - which I think should be to realign Logan Rd to Junction St (best case scenario), and changed to a signalised intersection. If the development goes ahead as currently planned, we’d lose an ideal opportunity to fix this shocking bit of road infrastructure.

Thanks to a few amazing locals who letterboxed flyers over the holidays, there are already over 100 submissions on the Council’s website. These submissions will be considered by the council (but you will only have grounds for appeal if it’s made during the public notification period, which is yet to open - we'll let everyone know when that happens).

I’ve yet to hear back from Cr Cunningham’s office regarding the Wee Hur development and our community's demands for the developers to pay to fix O’Keefe Street roundabout, but I think the community is doing an amazing job so far of making it clear that we need safe roads and safe ways to get around.

If you haven’t already, make sure to sign the petition here: www.amymacmahon.com/roundabout and use the email template to tell Fiona Cunningham to fix the O’Keefe Street roundabout.

We know submissions alone won’t be enough to get rich & powerful developers like Wee Hur to contribute to public infrastructure, and that all too often, community consultation is weak, or just ignored.

We’re going to have to work hard as a community to make our voices heard. If you’d like to be more involved, reach out to my office and I can connect you to other locals who are organising in the community.

This is so frustrating. 😡😡

The proposed development on the corner of Logan Rd and O’Keefe St will have a massive impact on our neighbourhood and we need council to commit to making the developers pay to upgrade the O’Keefe St roundabout.

We all have a right to access our community safely, whether that’s on foot, by bike, public transport or car. We have so many great facilities in this area that we should be able to walk to, but the O’Keefe St roundabout is a major barrier.

If you want Councillor Fiona Cunningham to respond to Amy MacMahon - Greens MP for South Brisbane’s queries, send her a letter. Details in the post below👇

Stones Corner Road Safety upgrading this roundabout is our next priority for the area.

I emailed Councillor Fiona Cunningham five weeks ago asking her to meet with me to discuss the communities concerns about the proposed Wee Hur development and the desperate need to upgrade the O’Keefe street roundabout.

I haven’t heard anything back from her. It is not unusual for elected representatives from Labor or LNP to ignore emails from members of other parties, but it is disappointing that Cr Cunningham doesn’t seem to care about the concerns of her constituents.

I’m hoping she will be more likely to listen to the community if she hears directly from you herself. If you haven’t already, it’d be a great idea to send a quick email or give her office a call to let her know that you want her to use her power in Council to make the developers pay to fix the roundabout and push back against the development. You can use this template if you’re short on time https://www.amymacmahon.com/roundaboutaction. Her office number is (07) 3403 2101.

We know that the council is in communication with the developers about the project and that there have already been changes based on feedback from the Council. It is deeply infuriating that the community is locked out of these discussion. But it does mean that Cr Fiona Cunningham has the opportunity to be pushing back against the current proposal now before submissions open to the public. Its up to us to make sure she’s feeling the pressure from the community.

Come along to today’s community meeting about the problems give development proposal for the vacant block next to the O’Keefe St roundabout.

The meeting is at 4pm at the new playground in Hanlon Park..

You can hear more about this site, which
was designated as a Transit Oriented Development zone to support a high- density development that would take full advantage of the bus and train stations.

Instead what developer Wee Hur is proposing is a transit ADJACENT development— all the height concessions without any of the high-quality public transport and active transport linkages.

Come and have your say! See you at the meeting…
