We would like to express our gratitude to the City of Moreton Bay, who have generously approved $2,000 funding under the Local Community Support Grant (Community Grants). This funding has enabled us to purchase 2 x new soccer goals to replace the 1 remaining goal which was being held together with duct tape in its final days. This enables use from our youth, school, church, sporting and various other community groups. Thank you!

Well, this is what I expected with Alfred...not sure what this storms name is, but definitely memorable. Thankfully no groups were in this week and we are all good to go again for tomorrow's arrival. All the best to Council, SES, Energex and general community as recovery efforts continue. Although we had a hectic clean up we have fared ok and power has been restored this morning.

It was awesome to recently host Bribie Island State High School Year 7 and Student Leader Camp. The youth seemed to have an amazing time with an abundance of activities, led by the School teachers & crew from Adventure Alternatives. Thank you to all involved for creating these memories.

Endless Thanks to Terry Young, Member for Longman with pledge below towards long awaited completion of works at the Bribie Island Retreat and Recreation Centre.

🌿 Big Boost for Bribie Island Retreat & Recreation Centre! 🏕️

We’re proud to announce that an elected LNP Government will contribute funding towards the much-needed redevelopment of the Bribie Island Retreat and Recreation Centre at Woorim.

This centre plays a huge role in our community, providing affordable, inclusive accommodation for school camps, youth groups, community organisations, and people with disabilities.

With demand growing fast, this upgrade will deliver:
✅ 4 brand-new cabins
✅ A dedicated caretaker’s residence
✅ An outdoor amphitheatre for events and presentations
✅ Major power, water & sewerage upgrades
✅ An increase in capacity from 60 to 110 beds

Whether it’s a school group, disability support program, or local family camp, more people will now be able to enjoy what this fantastic centre has to offer.

This is a real win for Bribie! Backing local groups, supporting youth development, and boosting local tourism in one of Queensland’s most loved coastal communities.

We hope you all enjoy the upcoming long weekend, with Greek Orthodox Easter also coinciding this year on Sunday. As we have a large youth camp in progress, we kindly request visitors not to walk or drive into the site during this time. This is a safety & privacy precaution to avoid any crossover between youth playing and unexpected vehicles or unknown people being on site which causes concern to our guests. We don't have a service in the Church on Sunday, however feel free to reach out to one of our closest Parishes in Taigum, South Brisbane or Mt Gravatt. If you would like to visit the Chapel after the holidays, feel free to contact me at [email protected] and I can schedule a suitable day & time when the site is vacant.. Many Thanks for your understanding.

20/09/2024

On behalf of the Bribie Retreat and Recreation Centre Board of Management and the Bribie ‘OPA’ Greek Festival Committee, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all involved in the Festival for 2024.

To the tireless organising committee; the day simply would not exist without this small group of amazing people who do all they do because they believe in the cultural significance that the event provides for the local and regional community. The preparations for this event started 12 months in advance, with many late-night meetings, and an extraordinary number of hours spent as volunteers in addition to their already busy personal work commitments and schedules. This isn't a 1-day event for the committee - the majority invest 4 days on-site in preparation, delivery and clean-up after the event; without fanfare or acknowledgement.

To our general volunteers, donors, dancers, exhibitors, partners and service providers; this event would not proceed from concept to actuality without the couple of hundred people who uproot from their own commitments to work steadfastly throughout the day (and often many days before and after the event). The majority of our volunteers hail from our Greek Orthodox Parishes in Taigum, Brisbane, Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast and even Cairns. A high percentage of these volunteers are our ever-wise, senior generation who work well beyond standard expectations to provide the best possible experience of Greek Culture for our visitors.

To all levels of Government who provide both material support and in attendance on the day to their already hectic schedules:

Councillor Peter Flannery - Mayor, and the City of Moreton Bay and our Division One Councillor Brooke Savige who generously provide funding support, Marquees, Waste Bins and advertising support.

State Member for Pumicestone, Ali King MP, who provided Funding Support (via Multicultural Affairs Queensland) and provision of Marquees.

Federal Member for Longman, Terry Young MP, who also provided provision of Marquee and advertising support.

To the almost 3,000 people who attended on the day, we say Thank you.

All of the preparation and coordination of volunteers is for nothing if the community don't support the event. We appreciate you choosing to spend your time to be actively involved in our event. My personal favourite moment of the day is watching the general crowd assimilate with the Dancing groups and Band to create what ‘OPA’ is intended to provide...a rare moment where we can pause...be present...and celebrate your inner Greek with family and community.

We also apologise where we fell short. We certainly don't intend to make mistakes and spend countless hours in preparation to try and make this the best possible community event as we can. We ran into some key hurdles such as providers pulling out with late notice, food and coffee queues, skeleton volunteer base and equipment failure. These are reasons but ultimately, we accept that these aren't excuses and we live and learn for the next time.

OPA Bribie!

Bribie OPA Greek Festival - Getting here. A road closure will be in place on the western entrance of Third Avenue (intersecting with North Street). Exceptions will be arranged if PWD accessibility required. General parking is available in surrounding streets and public car park areas around Woorim. This parking is limited so we encourage groups to travel together where possible to limit the number of cars required. Public Transport is also a perfect option (especially being only 50c) with a bus stop less than 100 metres away from our entrance (North Street, near Fourth Avenue). Another option is to park at Bribie Island Recreation Grounds (First Avenue) or the Bribie Island park'n'ride (shopping centre) where there is more substantial parking and then jump on a quick bus trip to Woorim from there (look out for Route 640) which starts and returns all the way to Caboolture Train station as well if travelling from further away.

Scheduled departure times for Route 640
