Aquaculture Development Area Open House - We Want to Hear from You!!

Join us at one of our Aquaculture Development Area Open Houses being hosted at the Glenwood Hall and Tusket Municipal Administration Building.

For the last three years, we have been working together with the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture towards the creation of Canada's first Aquaculture Development Area (ADA).

An important objective of this ADA is to remove some of the burden placed on investors by simplifying the application process in specific areas. Our role in this process is to inform the public of the project and to gather feedback.

We want to hear from you as we continue in our process of identifying suitable areas for the expansion of shellfish and marine plant aquaculture in our area.

If you would like to give your input, please attend one of the following open houses:

Glenwood Hall (5832 Highway 3, Glenwood)
Wednesday, October 19
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Argyle Municipal Administration Building (5 J.E. Hatfield Court, Tusket)
Wednesday, October 19
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Yes, we are host to SubSea sensors in Lobster bay since 2017. SubSea is a term meaning that the sensors are below the surface and not visible to those on the water.

There are three currently; off Ram Island, Tucker Island, and off Wedgeport.

The string of equipment is moored to the ocean floor using “scrap” metal attached to an InnovaSea VR2 acoustic release. The VR2 serves two functions; it detects tagged animals in Lobsters Bay such as great white sharks and sea turtles and it allows CMAR to use a transponder box to release the sensor string with the press of a button.

They keep the buoys submerged to avoid tampering or targeted vandalism.

Bob the buoy has gone to buoy heaven! However sensor strings still remain in the Lobster Bay area.

They are comprised of aquaMeasureDOTs (dissolved oxygen), HOBO temperature sensors, and sometimes aquaMeasureSAL (salinity). The configuration of the strings is dependent upon the data required. Salinity is less of concern for finfish while it is extremely important for oysters.

Our friends at CMAR, the Centre for Marine Applied Research, currently have subsea sensors deployed off in our area.

More on subsea sensors tomorrow!

It was a little chilly on the water this morning. Minus 6 Degrees Celsius with a wind chill of - 11.
Alix Arthur d'Entremont and Chris Beck visited Bob the buoy.
An accumulation of ice on the wind and wave buoy off Abbott's Harbour could be the reason why its batteries are low. The electronics have been removed to try and troubleshoot the problem.

Vase tunicates, or sea squirts as we affectionately call them, have been in SW Nova Scotia for over a decade. They live for about 1.5 years and reproduce twice a year by budding; meaning they grow in size, not scattered about. They filter water and are known to compete with mussels for food. The best way to destroy them is to air dry them for 2 days.
