Mostly I photograph: Night Scape, Aurora Australis, Meteors, Southern Sky, Native Fungi, Slime Mould, Native Orchids, Native insects. Yes, it's that simple .... shame it can't be done for the modern car head lights, So harsh on the eyes and worse when they are following behind at close distance.
Take note newer car owners.

Want to see stars in your region? Aim your lights down, keep them warm, use only as bright as you need and turn them off when not needed. It's that simple.

Capture is capture isn't it
My one and only chance of some clear-ish sky.
Only had about 20-30mins sky window before the cloud / haze made it too difficult to keep track of it in camera.
Sad I missed getting another comet nearby in the sky imaged.
Can't even say 'next time' for two comets cause that's just unknown.
--------
Story to this comet is that it was recently noticed / confirmed in early Sept 2025
It was approaching on the far side of our Sun, sunlight obscuring it until it got closer. I believe it wasn't until our Space weather satellites orbiting Earth captured it and a human then spotted it in the imagery.
One of a few comets that is more viewable in the Sth Hemisphere low to west near Mars than Nth Hemisphere.
It appears to be brightening and hopefully survives it's perihelion [closest to Sun]
Closest approach to Earth will be around 19th October 2025

LAST DAY
Reminder if you could support and share signing this petition to reduce light pollution.
- It well help preserve night sky viewing for humans.
- Reduce Circadium disruption for nocturnal species.
- It's not about blanket reduction of light to risk safety.
- On the contrary, softer, warmer lighting is more friendly.
!! Green light is good for night vision. Even amber but not Red !!
?? why do the military use green for night vision clarity ??
- Have you noticed even modern car head lights are harsher along with all the electronic signage on buildings?
- Imagine if all these lights were softer, controlled better with sensors, pointed downward instead of in your eyes all the time.
- Have blinkers [side covers] on the street lights aiming the light downward instead. It use to be a thing to have on street lights.
- Lighting that is along the ground instead of high up.
- Reduction of eye strain and related stresses.
It is such a shame modern thinking & behaviours have impacted people to be scared of darkness.
Thank you. 🪐🌏🌍🌘🌙
FYI: There are two Comets ☄️☄️in our western sky, low on the horizon. Comets are more regular than some people realise.
Wouldn't it be fantastic if they were more naked eye viewable without light pollution ?
Ohh and then there's all those new Starlink satellites causing a huge issue for Astronomy/Astrophotography but that is a discussion for another time.

Well it has been a slow start to fungi in general this 2025 compared to 2024. Seeing far less variety so far.
Despite some decent rains through March they were interrupted by very warm drying days.
I was surprised to actually see some viable Omphalotus nidiformis (aka: ghost fungi)
Up until finding these had only seen some emerging but growth halted by those warm days.
This lot were on two different tracks near each other. One spot had two fallen she-oaks near each other with multiple fruiting bodies on them.

Tāhuna Glenorchy has officially become New Zealand’s 5th International Dark Sky Sanctuary and the 23rd worldwide! A major step toward making New Zealand the world’s first Dark Sky Nation! Nestled at the head of Lake Whakatipu and surrounded by the stunning UNESCO Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Wilderness, this sanctuary protects some of the most pristine night skies on Earth.

Home to Great Walks by day, takahē at dusk & the Milky Way at night, Tāhuna Glenorchy will be one of the rare places on Earth to see the Total Solar Eclipse in 2028, and the only designated International Dark Sky Sanctuary in its path.

Congratulations to the Tāhuna Glenorchy Dark Sky Group and all involved in this incredible achievement! 🎉 https://bit.ly/3Cvgn3S
