Please take extra care on our roads. The Easter long weekend marks the beginning of joey season, and with increased traffic, cooler weather and the full moon, wildlife activity is on the rise.

With a long weekend, snow and freezing conditions predicted for much of our region, please be on the look out for animals injured or impacted in the extreme weather. Please check pouches of any deceased animals you come across, as any pouch young won’t survive long in these conditions. Call any rescues through to WIRES (24 x 7) on 1300 094 737. Thank you.

Have you found a native animal in distress or deceased?

If it is safe to do so, please check the animal. If it is injured please call WIRES on the number below for assistance.

If the animal is deceased, try and identify if there are any marsupial pouch young. Animals who have pouches in the Central West include wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, gliders, koalas, bandicoots and quolls.

If you find a joey, please contain in a warm pouch or pillowcase and keep warm, dark and quiet.

If the joey is attached to a teat, please do not pull it off as this can cause damage to the animals’ delicate mouth.

As we head into the school holidays, we see an increase in people travelling out of the city and into our beautiful regional areas. This increase in traffic, cooler weather in combination with the full moon, means that wildlife are also on the move.

Please help avoid adding to the wildlife road toll by following three easy steps:

1. Slow down if travelling between dusk and dawn – and avoid travelling at night if you can.
2. Stop and check pouches and injured wildlife – if safe to do so.
3. Call WIRES on 1300 094 737 if you find a native animal in distress. Please pop the number in your phone, before you travel.

As the Central West picks up the pieces from last night's destructive storm, please be on the lookout for injured or displaced wildlife in the next few days. Nests can be blown from trees, throwing nestling birds to the ground. Animals can also turn up in unexpected places due to fleeing in panic. If you find an injured animal and it's safe to do so, please wrap it in a towel or blanket and contain it in a cardboard box, then call WIRES on 1300 094 737. Due to the busy time, it may also be appropriate to take it to your local vet, who will assess the animal and contact a carer. Thank you.

Echidna Tales. Recently across the Central West region, healthy Echidnas have been dropped into our vets or called into Wires because they were found in their yards. Please, do not relocate Echidnas. It is breeding season, they are on the move , have an inbuilt GPS to follow scent trails for food and females will have young on board and getting ready to create burrows to place their puggles into. Moving echidnas from their home range would be a death sentence for any puggle in this situation. Let us celebrate the privilege of their visit to our homes by embracing their presence. With extremely wet weather predicted in our state over the next few days, please watch out for wildlife. We've had a long and warm summer, so this change in the weather will be unexpected for some animals. Please be on the look out for turtles crossing the roads, waterlogged birds and wildlife seeking higher ground in the event of flooding.
